More on the Medium Panel at PaleyFest

20090911_zaf_a75_169.jpg

I have been waiting for this video all weekend, but here it is: TV Guide covered PaleyFest 2009, and posted some red carpet interviews with the cast. He asks each of them what’s in store for their characters this season– except for poor Maria Lark. He just asks her what happened to her ankle. Here response? “Too many Shirley Temples. I’m just a closet drinker.” Man, I wish I were as cool as she is.

(Warning: the video has slight spoilers for season 6)

TV Guide also posted an interview with Patricia Arquette, that had some spoilers for season 6. More on that after the jump.

Basically, the stuff that Arquette talks about are all things we basically already knew, or at least suspected. For instance, Joe won’t be commuting to California any longer.

“Joe’s had to give up this job. He was working in California, commuting back and forth, and he kind of had to walk away. She obviously hasn’t been working. And then physically, Allison been going through a lot of changes, trying to learn to how to rehab, not having these gifts, figuring out who she’s going to be in the world. So they’re going through a lot of internal changes and external changes.”

It also seems like Ariel’s haircut is due more to teenage rebellion than solidarity to with her mother. In addition to the smoking and getting arrested (!) that she alludes to in the video, Vassilieva also says,

“Ariel’s also changed as a person. She’s not necessarily the bubbly Ariel we’ve all come to know – she’s the caretaker now. So it’s a little bit different of a personality that she’s expressed through her hair.”

I know a lot of you have been very vocal about not wanting to see more drama with Joe’s job, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be ending any time soon. However, it doesn’t seem as though it’s going to be a focus– Ariel looks as though she’ll be keeping the DuBois family more than occupied in the near future.

Cute clip. Sofia looked liked she enjoyed herself. GGC too. Patricia looks like she was under the weather with a cold. Maria is growing up before our eyes. Remember how adorable she was in season one.

Oh, ugh! I hope they keep Joe’s job stuff to a minimum. I really hate to see them making Ariel into a rebellious teen, but I suppose they feel that is real and to a certain extinct it is. A friend of mine was just telling me about his 15 year old daughter who up to this point has been an angel and a straight A student. Enter the “boyfriend” and guess what? She takes her mother’s truck to go see him when Mom and Dad are out visiting relatives! Oy Vey! Fortunately, her mother discovered she’d taken it instead of having the police pull her over.

I agree with you Betty, I didn’t want to mention it in my first comment but yes
UGH more “Joe deals with work”stuff. Not looking foward to that part. But I am looking foward to everything else about Medium. I think the rebellious Ariel stuff is during the second episode when she is possessed by a stripper.

I saw this TV Guide snippet yesterday and agree with all the comments so far.

Uggghhh about us being subjected to more of Joe and his work. I understand that he is the husband so they need to talk about his job, but talking is fine. Why do we have to “watch” him outside the home doing work stuff? That is not why I watch Medium. I have no interest in his job.

I don’t want to see anymore of Joe’s job stuff either. I wish they would keep it to a minimum but from the sound of this video and the summary I read on the Medium cbs.com site it sounds like it is going to be a significant subplot for season 6, Or at least more than any of us would like to see.

We’ll have to see what happens with Ariel. I think she might just be bad for that one episode but who knows.

Maria Lark is funny. I guess they grow up fast in this industry. I couldn’t imagine my 11 year old daughter joking about drinking like that. Although Maria might be a little older.

Karen, I imagine Maria and all the girls for that matter spend a lot of time around adults on the set. Even though they are tutored, they still spend a lot more time with adults then most kids their age. I think all the girls on Medium are also very intelligent. In entertainment, kids have to grow up fast, but even in the real world, it seems as if our kids don’t get to be kids very long anymore – sad really.

I hear GGC likes the Medium Dreams website and often comes here to read the posts. Maybe if we keep posting about how much we detest all the time spent on/at Joe’s jobs or interviews for jobs, maybe he will get the message and change the focus of the show. Joe’s job stuff is a real drag and brings the story to a screeching halt whenever it comes on. I know California is struggling still in a lot of ways, but the economy is looking up, so I hope Joe will have a permanent job and we won’t have to be a part of the process again.

I think Maria’s always had a quirky sense of humour, wiser than her years. That’s evident from the gag reels. The little snippet where she replies, “indeed” to a comment by Patricia by men, for instance.

As for Joe’s job, someone has to defend it! For me, it interlinks well with the other stories on the show, especially in showing the girls developing abilities: Marie and the paper dolls, Bridgette and her visions (Dead Aim, Whatever Possessed You) and there’s been moments with Ariel too. There was also the general unease of “Joe Day Afternoon” where they was nothing Ariel and Allison could really do, “Too Close to Call” the end of which were he tells as it is to the ex-girlfriend from college is perhaps my favourite Joe quote. Or, even, when Allison was a little more crazy than normal in “A Person of Interest” was linked into Joe’s job.

Yes, I prefer seeing Joe with a settled job and hope the writers give us that this season, but I don’t mind it seeing Joe at work.

For me it has nothing to do with the economy. I just find Joes Job situation boring!!! Remember “The Devil Inside” They went so far as to have Ariel dream
scientific equations and tell them to Joe then he brought them to his boss. I was so bored I switched channels. I would have rather seen Agent Cooper and Allison or Scanlon/DiNovi or the Kids or Devolos or anything except Joes job situation. They must have the real Joe Dubois consulting for this. Maybe Medium has a following of aerospace engineers because I can’t imagine anyone else who wants to see them go so extensive into Joes career.

I am dreading the part of the season premiere where Joe goes into Maries’ class to speak about his job. I think I am beyond bored now and just fed up with it.

I don’t mean to sound so negative. I love Medium, it has been my favorite show since it started and I love everything else about it.

  9. Kieran

Im looking forward to the new season. I love that Ariel will become more of a rebel. I hope they dont just shun it off, its about time the eldest got a little naughty.

I dont mean to sound mean but I dont care about Joes job. Although I love love love the hostage episode that came from him working at Aerodytech but other than that I dont really like it.

Speaking of jobs though. I really hope this season everyone really begins to take Allison seriously. Is it just me or does it still seem after 5 years of for the most part acurate dreams Devalos and Scanlin still do not take her seriously. If she came into my office after being right a few times and said I was about to have a baby (and Im male) I would be out shopping for baby clothes.

I hope Maria gets better soon. Shes one of my faves, shes so funny and such a great little comedic actor when she does her little one liners.

I wish I had a Shirley Temple right now :)

  10. Kelly

OOPS my mistake, the episode with Ariel dreaming the equations for Joes Job was” A Necessary Evil”.”The Devil Inside” was with Marie cutting out the paper dolls involving Joes Job situation.

  11. Gina

That’s okay Kelly no matter which episode it is ,the general consensus is that the majority of us are bored with Joes job storylines.

Unfortunately, We will probably just have to grin and bear it for a while. Even if the writers check this site every so often as Betty says ,several episodes are already complete for season six and who knows how many are already being written with Joes job storyline. :[
