I am so ticked off at network TV! I do not appreciate it when shows I have followed get cancelled, and I know I’m not alone.
Suprisingly, NBC decided Thursday to cancel Southland — before its second season premiere scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23.
So why am I so mad? Well, I’ve been looking forward to the show returning! To me, it was one of the best new shows of last season. And if you remember, they didn’t air that many episodes in the first season.
When they first scheduled Southland’s second season for Friday night, I wasn’t even upset. Once CW moved Smallville to Friday nights, the Friday night TV schedule to me became the “new Thursday night.” I was looking forward to watching Smallville then Southland on Fridays!
The Twitter chatter right now (on the eve of the cancellation) is going crazy. Everyone is upset that one of their favorite new shows was canceled! And, like the New York Times said, it was one of the well-regarded series as far as fans and critics go!
Who else thinks this has more to do with NBC trying more cutbacks (like Jay Leno’s show taking over the 9 p.m. spot!) than with a lack of ratings confidence in Southland or saying the show is too dark for primetime?
Southland star Michael Cudlitz, who played training officer John Cooper, isn’t happy, if you read his Tweets below:
“Call NBC and ask them where the promos are…….. I am serious.”
“Don’t go quietly…….. People need to know when they *@$%@ up this big. Saw ep 2.1 …….. Dumb *#@$% people. Lol”
Southland Executive Producer John Wells also isn’t happy about the cancellation and may be shopping for a new home for the show, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I am disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically acclaimed series that was for so many years the hallmark of their success,” Wells said in a statement.
And though I admit I am a BIG Benjamin McKenzie fan from The OC (who played rookie cop Ben Sherman on Southland), I’m going to miss the whole show, not just McKenzie. I thought Cudlitz did a great job and wanted to see what else was going to happen with his character. I love Regina King (Det. Lydia Adams on Southland) and I wanted to know what was going to happen to Det. Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott).
By the way, here is one promo I just saw a few nights ago. I was getting pumped for the new season (oh, well!). NBC will probably pull this promo from their website in a few days.
And here are a few photos that were supposed to be from the first episode of the second season called “Butch & Sundance”:
