There is a script review for Valkyrie. The review labeled the script as excellent.

........The McQuarrie-Alexander script is described as excellent - with suspense, honor, horror, and history all mixed in together. To some of us it will be heroic history, to youngsters it will be a thriller.

Here is what was said about filming in Germany:

And even though we could shoot the movie anywhere in the world, we believe Germany is the only place we can truly do the story justice.”

i haven't followed this movie at all, but didn't they shoot the movie in germany in order to show actual sites where the events happened? one would assume so, otherwise why go to all the added expense, especially when they were unwelcome.

When a movie based on a true story comes out, I think many people fear that the movie will re-write history.
And with the main character speaking with a California accent that fear might be coming true.
Tom made the movie in Germany in hopes of showing the German people that he is a good person. He is hoping to get the Germans to see COS as something other then a Cult.
Everyone that has ever worked with tom never says anything negative about him.

I am not German Bumble, but I see your point and agree with you.

Not all Westerns are down on Germans( I am one), we all have our tales of survival and loss. And should have compassion for the different stories.

I think it is sad when people can only view things from their perspective.

I can see why the Germans would feel that way, but I bet some of the protesters who were in charge met Tom, and that is why they allowed them to continue filming. He is quite charming and convincing.

But I agree with your Hollywood comment, it is a strange place and they do tend to be quite arrogant about their rules and desires. I wonder exactly how they handled the plight. All I saw was one day they said no way and the "next "they had given their OK.

OKay maybe it's just non-Americans who are disconcerted by American accents in films that are set outside of America.

But the subject matter oh Val doesn't appeal to me. Every city I go to near where I live has memorials of atrocities committed either by the Nazis or by the communist governments. I'd rather save my cinema money to visit museums where I can see what happened first hand, and try to understand the real personal perspective.

If any of you ever go to Budapest, there are two fantastic museums: the Holocaust Museum is educational and moving. It reduced my friend to tears (no joke, I found her in the toilet crying). And the House of Terror taught me more about the Nazis and the communist secret police than any movie will tell me. Similarly, in Germany, the concentration camp memorial at Dachau (suburb of Munich) is free to visit and equally sad and moving.

As I'm writing this, I can see why the filming of the movie in Germany was controversial (not only because of Scieo stuff). (This is just my opinion...!) I think the German psyche is very mixed up about their past, and it is still something that most Germans struggle to deal with every day. Especially because I get the idea the West looks down on Germany if they try to celebrate their war dead (think of all the fathers and grandfathers who were drafted and died in the Nazi army, who weren't evil, just normal people fighting for their country).

For Hollywood to come waltzing into the country to film a movie that they probably could have filmed in LA, making a movie about a futile attempt to kill Hitler, and waltz back out again, might have been a little insensitive.

Are there any Germans out there who can shed any light on my opinion?

I had no problem with Tom taking part in LFL. Some one has to make movies like that. I have to admit that I thought it was arrogant of them to open a studio with it. They took people for granted. The studio though has funding and all it needs is a good blockbuster to kick start it. I trust Tom Cruise, he has a good head on his shoulders.

They are many reasons am going to watch Valkyrie and not least because am a fan of Singer. I also think it is a good story.

Fox and some people have waged a war against it. I am still going to watch it because I think it will be money well spent.

Kelli: He did intend to live off the land in Alaska. He destroyed the Natl Park Service Station because he saw it as the GOVT destroying the land. He also had issues with authority figures. They said if he hadn't done that he would not have starved to death and could have gotten help.

So yeah...his arrogance slowly killed him.
