Nicole Richie and Joel Madden each wrote a blog post for UNICEF over the holidays, as part of UNICEF’s 12 Days of 2008, where a different celebrity wrote a post each day during the last 12 days of 2008 in support for UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts program.
UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts is a program encouraging participants to buy a gift for a child in need in honor of a friend or family member. UNICEF will then send a card to your friend and the gift to a child who needs it the most. You can learn more about this program at their website.
Other celebrities who participated include Sarah Jessica Parker, Ne-Yo, Benji Madden, Al Roker, Clay Aiken, Lucy Liu, Tea Leoni, Mia Farrow, Jon McLaughlin, Alyssa Milano, and Marcus Samuelsson. Each of these celebrities is a UNICEF celebrity ambassador and you can read each other their posts at UNICEF’s Field Notes.
Joel wrote his post on December 26. He wrote about his trip to the Central African Republic and how having regular access to clean water is difficult for the people of CAR. He suggests that in light of today’s fragile economy, you get together with a few friends and buy a collective present.
Nicole wrote her post on December 27. Nicole writes about how natural disasters and wars can drive families apart and they lack access to even the most basic essentials when they are driven from their homes. Giving a gift will give these families some of the supplies they need to make it through these difficult times.
Each post suggests a few Inspired Gifts related to the causes Joel and Nicole write about. I think this is a great cause and wonderful idea. I can’t help but wonder why the majority of this project occurred after Christmas. However, it’s important to give all year round, not just during the holidays.
