Nicole Richie was swamped by paparazzi today as she did some shopping in preparation for Joel Madden’s birthday celebrations yesterday in West Hollywood.
Buzzfoto says that Nicole was “gracious” as she left Alpha Male and was super friendly with all the paps. Sounds like she was in a great mood!
Joel spent the day hanging out with brother Benji and pal Tal. Check photos out of them on Melrose at GC State.
I wonder what she bought Joel for his birthday present?

Benji and Joel turned 29 today, but she bought one card with “Pushing 30″ on it, and I couldn’t help but giggle. Way to rub it in Nicole!
Most views of the Joel + Benji pics has the one with Joel smoking!! When did he start again? He should think of the baby. I hope he doesn’t smoke indoors.
I’m sure he’s not smoking around the baby…he’s not stupid.
I know he’s not stupid but it’s not nice for the baby to be kissed by a father that smells of smoke!!
I love how much shorter Benji looks than Joel… maybe if HE STOOD UP STRAIGHT! lol… It’s hard to believe it’s only a 2 inch difference…
I really hope Joel isn’t going back to his old habits. I hate it when either of them drink. They both had huge problems with drugs and alcohol.
Another ? for the Nicole Fans… when Nicole was pulled over in December, was she on her way to or from Joels house? I don’t think Joel would start doing drugs again… but I’m sure they’re both fine now…
I’m sure this comment makes a lot of sense to people, lol. I just wrote what I thought…
DCMA Queen (is tired)
They had big alcohol problems, but never big drug problems.
I read in a Seventeen article Joel said he did have problems with drugs for a while…and DCMA Queen, I’m pretty sure she was leaving his house…and I’ve seen a few pictures of Benj and a video where he looks a bit intoxicated….and I know other GC fans think so too.
Yeah, Joel did have some drug problems back in 2003 (just pills though). He’s been clean ever since.
Yeah, it was just pills. When you say ‘big drug problem’ it sounds like he actually took substances, but he never did. He popped pills after TY&TH came out, that’s it.
But yeah, he and Benj did have drinking problems, but that was most likely strongly influenced by their Dad, as was their decision to try and turn sober.
He has said himself he had “big problems with heroin and pot.” He even talked about how when he got clean he got real sick, I have the article sitting in front of me. It was with Seventeen magazine, but I don’t have the dates. I know he had prblms with pills and drinking (and I have seen that video of Benji drunk at the zumiez 100k or whatever) but I’m just saying… I just hope that they’re both clean and sober and intent on staying that way.

THey must have twisted his words, because I have heard the words come out of his mouth that he was never been a pothead. And about heroin, he did once say if he didnt smoke he would be doing heroin, but he never said he did it.
i remember reading the pills part somewhere too, i’ll try to find it. and in the interview in seventeen he doesn’t say anything about taking heroin or pot… just calls them drugs. the scans from it are at getdownwithgc.com in articles section.
Yeah, he’s definitely done pills for a short period of time after their second album, and those are the only drugs he’s ever been public with, and since he’s an honest guy, I presume that’s the only thing he has actually had an issue with.
