Oprah and Dr. Oz's "Stop Smoking" Plan!

Dr. Oz and Oprah Breathe Free

Some Daytime Talk readers have left comments or emailed me for information about Dr. Oz’s smoking cessation plan that aired on The Oprah Winfrey Show earlier this week.  For a complete recap of the episode, click here!

Here are some of the suggested activities for those who wish to quit smoking (more info can be found at the recap link above):

First take the Addiction Self Exam:

  • 15 Reasons to Quit – Quit for your health. Quit for your children. Quit for your pocketbook. No matter your motivation, just quit.
  • The Nicotine Dependence Test – Take this minute-long test to determine how addicted you are—and the best way to make sure you quit for good this time.
  • Are You Addicted? – It’s time to come clean. Answer this self-assessment about your smoking habits, withdrawal symptoms and emotions.

More after the jump!

Next, "Going Smoke Free:"

  • Print a Pledge – Pick a "quit date" and make the pledge to commit to a smoke-free, healthier you!
  • Smoking by the Clock – You might not be ready to go cold turkey just yet. This exercise will help you prepare for the day you go tobacco-free.
  • The Stressed Smoking Myth – Many smokers believe they need a cigarette most when their stress is highest. But is that belief true?
  • Walking the Walk – To improve your chances of successfully quitting, hit the road…or the treadmill…and walk 30 minutes a day.
  • Questions to Ask Your Doctor – If you’ve tried to quit on your own and failed, a health professional can help. Go prepared with questions you need to ask at your next appointment.
  • Your First Tobacco-Free Day – Congratulations! You’re almost ready. But before you kick butts forever, there are just a few more things you to consider.

Then, "Your No-Relapse Kit"

  • Avoiding Relapse – Moments of anxiety used to mean reaching for a cigarette. That’s the old you. Now, deal with your emotions with these strategies to stay smoke-free!
  • Coping with Withdrawal – From restlessness to possible weight gain, recognizing your own nicotine withdrawal symptoms is the first step to overcoming your addiction.
  • Dealing with Other Smokers – Friends don’t let friends…well, not always. Know how to be assertive with the smokers in your life. It’s for a good cause—you.
  • Relieve Your Anxiety – Stress is no stranger to any of us—quitting smoking or not. Listen to Dr. Erin Olivo’s audio meditation and avoid another puff.

Finally, "Find Support and Resources"

  • Find Support – Find or start a support group in your neighborhood with others ready to break their smoking habit!
  • Talk with Others – What’s helping you stop smoking? Share your secrets, find help and connect with others on our Breathe Easier: Stop Smoking message board.
  • After the Show – The conversation continues. Dr. Oz and Dr. Seidman answer more audience questions after the show.
  • Join the Journey – Soon to be ex-smokers from the show reveal their feelings as they look ahead. Follow their ups and downs, and start a video diary, too!
  • Help and Resources – Need an extra boost of motivation or have a stop-smoking related question? Our comprehensive list of organizations and resources can help.
  • Benefits of Quitting – Giving up cigarettes for good offers a tremendous amount of positive life changes—from immediate rewards to long-term benefits. Change your life for good!

In a few months it will be 13 years since my huband passed away. I am an older parent and our son was 12 years old at the time. There is one thing I would like to share with the smoker and the families left behind because of a loved one that smoked. But in order to have that amount of space I guess I would have to write a book. Instead I will share an article I wrote to the Press Telegram January 25, 1996. “This morning I was cleaning out a closet and found a bag filled with cigarette wrappers. I was so angry that I wrote the following letter. I hope you will print it so others may think about what they are doing, not only to themselves but to those that are left behind. ‘To: Montclair Cigarette Company I wanted to thank you for your cigarette promotion you had a couple of years ago. By saving cigarette wrappers my husband was able to get a watch, bracelet, camera, calculator and backgammon set. Then he received the most ultimate gift of all, lung cancer. He gave us his death May 3, 1995. His wife and 13-year-old son miss him very much.

How come every link I wanted simply took me to Oprah’s home page and not an article?
