Parenting Lessons from Teen Mom: Okay, Maybe Dr. Drew Doesn’t ALWAYS Have to Make You Cry…

Let’s see… Where were we? Oh, yes! Dr. Drew just tore Amber and her mother apart! Let’s resume there, shall we? Here’s part two of the spectacular yet terrifying Teen Mom reunion special, “Check-Up with Dr. Drew!”

AMBER
With no preamble, Amber shuffles back on stage. Dr. Drew takes a moment to talk about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Amber remarks that this was the first time she and her mom have ever talked about Candace. They wrap up, and carry on.

CATELYNN
Catelynn and Tyler are the next victims of Dr. Drew’s House of Horrors. His opening question to them: How would their lives have been different had they not opted for adoption? Well, Catelynn, for one, doesn’t think she would have graduated high school. Tyler might have, but she wouldn’t have. And with that, cue the montage.

Hey, look! Dr. Drew didn’t even have to MAKE Catelynn cry; the footage of this season did that all on its own! She tells Dr. Drew that she’s mostly crying about her dad; she misses him, and the visit was far too short. But hey, Catelynn and Tyler are in great shape as a couple in spite of Tyler’s uncertainties this year, which is gratifying to hear. Are those uncertainties still plaguing him to an extent? To an extent, of course; but, he says, he “knows where his heart is.” Awww. Catelynn, for her part, admits that the crazy things she thinks sometimes—that Tyler’s just going to “go out and screw all these women,” etc.—are just that: Crazy. But not in a bad way necessarily; it’s not him, or even them, but her insecurities, and they both know this.

Now, this is interesting: Where Catelynn’s insecurities come from. The show has never really touched on her body issues before, but they appear to be her weak spots. She says she never really lost the baby weight, so being taken back to her “8th grade chubby self” is a blow to her self-esteem. But again, they both understand this, and they deal with it as it comes. Good on them.

And now the burning question: How are things with Butch? Well… pretty much the same as always: Unresolved. Remember when he went back to jail at the end of the season? He got hauled back because of a parole violation: He saw April. Not a thing you want to do when you have a no-contact order in place.

Anyway, Butch may be in jail, but April’s here, so let’s bring her on out, shall we? She and Catelynn spill about their relationship, and once again, I’m blown away by Catelynn’s ability to articulate what’s going on: Their communication sucked at the beginning of the season, they were all reacting to badly to things, April felt the loss of Carly more deeply than perhaps Catelynn knew, they managed to talk things out, and now they’re more or less fine. For what it’s worth, April admits that trying to see Butch was dumb; and yes, the no-contact order will still be on when Butch gets back out. A little glimpse into the future here: They’re done now. Totally. Sigh.

We end by briefly discussing Tyler and April’s relationship, which we haven’t really seen much of lately. Tyler is overwhelmingly positive: He says she’s a great stepmom, they talk all the time, and perhaps most importantly, they share a connection over Butch. Feelings overall? This family has been very dysfunctional in the past, but maybe—just maybe—they’re finally working things out.
