Private Practice 1.05 "In Which Addison Finds a Showerhead" Recap & Screencaps

Private Practice

Episode title: “In Which Addison Finds a Showerhead” episode 5, season 1

Written by: Shonda Rhimes & Marti Noxon

Directed by: Julie Anne Robinson

We begin the episode with Addison in the elevator. The doors are about to close, but Pete manages to catch them just in time. This scene is very Grey’s Anatomy-like. Switch Addison for Meredith and Pete for McDreamy and you’re good to go. But, alas, it’s not Grey’s Anatomy. So, we’re back to Pete and Addison.

Pete looks like he wants to say something, and eventually stops the elevator to say it. What he has to say is that he can’t concentrate because Addison’s red hair and -especially – her brain are a huge turn on to a man as “highly evolved” as he is. Addison seems to agree. I guess she turns herself on as well. And they begin to kiss passionately against the wooden panels of the elevator.

But, of course, it’s just a dream. Addison falls off the bed and onto the floor.

Naomi seems surprised when Addison tells her all about her sexual fantasies about Pete over breakfast. “Pete is your dream guy?” Addison admits that she’s been having lots dreams about Pete and they’re making her “incredibly” … uh … itchy. Let’s go with the show’s euphemism.

They get interrupted by Maya (Naomi’s daughter) and her friend Ruby, who come down to breakfast.

We move on to Pete, who is doing one-armed push-ups. If only Addison could see him now.

He’s approached by a track coach who wants him to take a look at one of his athletes, Nic (Nick?). The coach says the girl’s got a cold. Pete agrees to try and treat her without medicine.

Over at Oceanside, the doctors are having their morning meeting. We find out that Dell is performing his first solo pap smear. They all cheer.

Quite randomly, Pete looks at Addison and says, “Why do you look so … you look hot.” They all stare. Hell, I’m staring. Who says that? But no, he means hot as in temperature wise; flushed. He didn’t really say it that way though. It was pretty weird, all the same. I’m sure it was just meant to be funny – so haha.

Moving swiftly along…

The girls get together to discuss Addison’s Pete fantasies. Violet talks about her sexual fantasies about Bill Clinton. Wuuuuut?? But this is meant to be good news because it means she’s over Alan. Thank God. That whole Alan thing made me want to throw myself off the nearest building. But uh … Bill?? Really? Alrighty…

The point is that fantasies are healthy. Whatever helps to scratch the itch. Addison says, “I don’t do that.” Violet and Naomi stare at each other incomprehensibly at this revelation, while Addison takes a call, oblivious to her friends’ WTF-type expressions.

vlcsnap-575776

I half expected the guy from The Princess Bride to pop on screen long enough to shout, “INCONCEIVABLE!”

But, he didn’t.

Dell approaches Sam and tells him that a patient is at the ER. Someone broke into her house and she got hurt. Sam looks upset by this news. At the hospital the woman tells the tale of the robbery, and paints it as no big deal, despite the big cut on her head. She says she tripped and fell on the table.

vlcsnap-578116

Back at the office, Cooper and Violet cheerfully discuss Violet being over Alan. This celebration is short lived because Dell runs over and says that Alan is actually in the lobby. Despite Cooper’s advice, Violet tells Alan that she does indeed have a minute to talk to him. Cooper isn’t happy.

vlcsnap-580616

At the clinic’s women’s bathroom, Maya and her friend Ruby are hiding in the stall. But Addison finds them because Maya called her. Maya is concerned that she has an STD. Addison’s brain explodes at the idea that Maya is having sex at the age of thirteen.

vlcsnap-582865

Back at the hospital, Sam is talking to his patient. The patient asks him to look into a drug that will make her forget her trauma. He agrees to look into it. Though his concern is obvious.

vlcsnap-584079

At the clinic, Addison seems to have agreed to help Maya. She isn’t happy about it though. She tries to talk to Maya about it, in a lecturing sort-of-way, but Maya tells her she’s not a kid. That shuts Addison up.

vlcsnap-585370

It’s pap time! Addison gives a very nervous Dell some sage advice. Dell promises to give a “happy pap.” Only a guy would call it that.

The pap turns out not to be so happy, as the lady is on her cell phone telling the person on the other end all about what Dell is doing wrong. And he becomes a nervous wreck. Poor Dell. No happy pap for you.

vlcsnap-588238

Pete is running some tests on Nic (the track girl). And it looks as if what she’s got is a little more serious than a chest cold.

vlcsnap-589210

Cooper paces outside Violet’s office. Violet is still in there with Alan and he’s concerened for her emotional well-being. It gets worse when Violet tells him that she and Alan have decided to be friends. Right. They argue back and forth. Sam is there too, and he tries to bring up his situation with Naomi as an example of ex-couples being successful friends. Addison interrupts and asks to borrow Cooper for a consult.

Sam talks to violet about his patient and that forgetting drug. Violet knows all about the drug. She agrees to talk to the patient.

Addison and Cooper discuss the Maya situation. Addison hates the fact that she can’t tell Naomi.

vlcsnap-594882

Yes it does suck.

At the hospital, Pete and Dr. Charlotte King are giving Nic the bad news. She’s going to need steroids to get her symptoms under control. But Nic freaks out since it’s her big chance to go to the Olympics. They insist that if she pushes herself too hard, she might die.

That also sucks.

Addison falls off the bed again. I guess she had another Pete fantasy.

vlcsnap-597813

Meanwhile, Happy Pap Smear Boy is struggling with another patient. The girl finds him “too cute” and won’t let him do the pap smear. Uh. Okay. Girl looks like she’s a bit of a freak. Run Pap Smear Boy, run! Naomi, who’s chaperoning, looks like this throughout the exchange:

vlcsnap-599419

I’m right there with ya.

Violet is counseling the robbery victim lady. The lady wants an easy forget-everything kind of cure, which doesn’t exist. At the mention of having to retell her experience in therapy, she freaks out and runs out of the office.

Definitely more to that story than she’d originally let on…

Addison walks into her office to find Maya there. She tells her the good news that she doesn’t have anything. She tries to talk to Maya about how long she’s been sexually active (one year), and about how condoms aren’t 100% effective (they’re not??), etc. But Naomi walks in and tells Maya that she has violin practice. Ignorance is bliss.

vlcsnap-603281

Cooper invites Pete out for beer to keep his mind off the fact that Violet is off getting her heart broken by Alan. But Pete is more concerned about Nic.

Pete isn’t the only one concerned about a patient. Violet shows up at robbery lady’s house to talk about what happened. Violet knows there had to be more.

Over at the track, Pete shows up to find Nic racing. She’s about to beat a record when she collapses on the ground.

vlcsnap-607511

Meanwhile, we learn that the robbery lady, Beth, wasn’t just robbed, she was sexually assaulted. The husband shows up to catch the tail end of the conversation.

vlcsnap-606469

At Oceanside, Sam and Violet try and help Beth and her husband through their crisis. The woman still wants the drug to help her forget.

At the hospital, we find out that someone gave Nic something that she turned out to be allergic to. Pete has no idea what it is or who gave it to her.

At casa de Violet, Cooper shows up with goodies to help Violet through her Alan-crisis. But it turns out Violet hasn’t gotten to the crisis part yet. Alan is over. Cooper is upset by the whole thing and tells her that he’s done picking up the pieces.

Addison has yet another Pete fantasy. She shows up to work to find Pete there. He knows all about her fantasies and teases her about them.

Another Happy Pap Smear attempt begins to go sour, but Dell gives a very touching monologue during which he compares himself to Mozart and Beethoven. Yes, my friends, Happy Pap Smear Boy is to be the Mozart of pap smears. The lady is moved by his speech. After all, it’s not every day that the Mozart of pap smears wants to poke around in your ladytown. Let us all line up.

Addison is watching Naomi, lamenting the fact that she can’t tell her best friend about her daughter. Speak of the devil, Maya calls with an emergency. Addison rushes over to find Ruby – Maya’s friend – on the kitchen floor, bleeding. We find out that it was actually Ruby who’d been having sex.

vlcsnap-615963

At the hospital, Addison takes Ruby into surgery. Her situation isn’t good. Maya is freaking out. She finally calls her mommy.

Violet and Sam counsel Beth and her husband. Violet calls Beth a survivor. Beth responds to that. She admits that her fear wasn’t that she couldn’t handle it but that her husband couldn’t. They talk about it. Lots of therapy for them.

Pete is still at the hospital with Nic. He tells her that she will never run again. Nic naturally freaks out. He begs her to tell him the name of the person who gave her the drugs. It turns out to be the coach.

Pete confronts the coach, who doesn’t seem to care about anything but Nic winning a track meet. Pete punches him.

vlcsnap-618360

At the beach, Violet and Alan talk. There are few words to express how little I care about this storyline. But, anyway, they’re talking about Alan’s wife. It comes out that Alan and his wife are trying to get pregnant. Violet freaks, and walks off.

Please tell me this is over. Please.

Violet talks to Sam about life and pain and growing. “Maybe growing sucks,” Violet says. And then she cries. Sam comforts her. Cooper watches the hall.

At the hospital, Addison tells Maya and Naomi that Ruby will be okay. Addison tells her never to do that again. Maya swears to Naomi that she’s still a virgin. Naomi is pissed. She’s even more pissed at Addison for not telling her.

vlcsnap-620549

I’m sure she’ll get over it. Addison advices Naomi to talk to Maya about sex.

Sam and Naomi discuss how Maya is growing up and how neither of them have had The Talk with her. They go back and forth about who has the right parts for that conversation. They realize they’ve still got a while to go before they become the model parents they aspire to be. They settle on getting a chastity belt for Maya.

… I think they’re kidding …

Violet goes to Cooper’s to ask why he didn’t check on her. Cooper lets her in.

Addison is back at her office. Pete passes by. He comes in and confesses that he too has fantasies about her. Addison is pleased by this. She notices the cut on Pete’s hand from punching the coach. She examines it. She decides that for her next sexual fantasy Pete will be a gladiator or a cowboy or something and rushes off …

… to scratch the itch.

Pete is like, “She didn’t need to tell me that.” But I think it’s kinda funny that she did. Weird. But funny.

Either way, Addison finds a showerhead…

vlcsnap-623516

Guess she does do that now.

I thought it was a pretty good epi all in all, I am for anything that keeps Addison out of Seattle.
I think it’s kind of sad that she has turned back into the band geek she apparently was growing up, but it’s just karma. I’m pro Paddison and Vooper.

Hey Lynn, I held a poll and a vast majority of everyone wanted me to cover Private Practice. Sorry it wasn’t Grey’s Anatomy news exactly :)

I LOVED reading your writeup of the show. I enjoyed the show, but reading it with your spark of humor (in just the right places) had me laughing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I can see how/why Addi turned back into the “band geek”; she’s back with the friends (Naomi) from that time in her life. On Grey’s she had to be strong and bossy and in charge with all those interns. Now she can be who she is. It would be nice if every once in awhile she refers to Seattle or if Grey’s refers to her and her style and how Alex (maybe?) has much to learn to do the things she did.

Private Practice is a bore. It doesn’t do Addison justice. The stories are lame and not funny. The actors are good, but not charismatic. It’s a waste of time. After 4 episodes, I don’t watch it anymore.

You obviously don’t want to do the recaps.
