The CW has just debuted a new show called Privileged, which started on Tuesday September 9th. The show is being compared a lot to Gilmore Girls. In fact, one of the writers on Gilmore Girls, Rita Mimoun, is both writer and executive producer for Privileged.
Privileged is based on the book “How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls ” by Zoey Dean. The series stars Joanna Garcia as Megan Smith and Lucy Hale as Rose Baker. Megan is a 23-year-old Yale graduate who is chipper and aims to conquer the world of journalism (sounds a little like Rory, hey?). However, when Megan gets fired from her tabloid job, she falls into a job as the live-in tutor for the twin teen granddaughters of cosmetics mogul Lauren Limoges (Anne Archer).
The twin teens, Rose (Lucy Hale) and Sage (Ashley Newbrough) live in Palm Beach in a world of power and wealth – and are as rebellious as two gorgeous rich girls could be. Megan is determined to win over the girls (who want nothing to do with her) and to un-muddle her already very confused love life.
The show has received decent ratings so far, though not the fandom yet of shows like Gossip Girl or 90210. The dialogue on Privileged is said to be “witty” and fast-paced, a la Gilmore Girls, and in fact is being compared to Gilmore in many articles. One writer even goes so far as to say “Privileged is the closest thing we’ve seen to that show [Gilmore Girls] since it left the air.”
Executive producer Rina Mimoun thinks of Privileged as a hybrid between Gilmore Girls and Gossip Girls: “It’s very much ‘What if the Gilmore Girls were teaching the Gossip Girls?”‘ The show tries to tap into the upbeat tone of Gilmore Girls, as well as the “sense of heart” of the relationships. Megan, as the surrogate mom on Privileged, is supposed to be our “Lorelai” here, with a combo of “Rory” tossed in. And Joanna Garcia is said to do for Megan what Lauren Graham did for Lorelai.
Have you seen the show? Do you like it? See any similarities to Gilmore Girls?

I was wondering when there would be an article about this.
After watching the first 10 minutes of the show I was getting rather bored of it to be honest. I was incredibly annoyed by the fact they said the Character Megan Smith was the “Next Rory Gilmore”. Sorry but I just can’t see Joanna Garcia pulling it off. Don’t get me wrong she was very entertaining on “Reba” but I just don’t find her very believeable at all.
Plus they used way to much of Rory’s character traits for the basis of there character, and I personally didn’t feel it worked.

I am so not interested in watching this show. I find it annoying that CW is trying to come up with another “Gilmore Girls” look-alike. They should have appreciated the show, the writers, and the cast more when it was on their network!

I don’t think any show can be like Gilmore girls even if they try.

Uh, no. I saw the pilot and there was much fast-forwarding. I don’t think Joanna Garcia is a strong enough actor to pull off the role she was given. I also think Ashley Newbrough is totally miscast as Sage. She looks and acts too much like a college upperclassman and is not believable as a high school student. Of the three stars, Lucy Hale is the only one who is a positive. To bad Hale is doomed to being typecast as the clueless little sister. She’s going to have a heck of a time getting away from that.
I’ll watch this week, but I’m going to keep the fast forward button handy. There is pretty much no chance of this approaching Gilmore Girls (even Season 7) in terms of quality.

I did not like the show to be honest; i thought it was kind of stupid and pointless. I personally think it was not like gilmore girls, and i think people were saying it is like gilmore girls only because one of the main charectors rose backer went to Yale and majored as a Journalist.

I don’t see any comparison to Gilmore girls at all whatsoever, except for the Yale graduate who had a major in journalism. I watched the pilot last night and I didn’t like it at all. I just thought it was kind of stupid! It didn’t have a point like Gilmore girls did! Frankly, I just did not see anything in common with Gilmore girls. Lucy Hale is a good actress though. She sucks compared to Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel!!!!!!!
