Leighton Meester is a 25-year-old actress known for portraying a well-bred rich kid from Manhattan on TV and recording saccharine electronic pop music. And yes, she also appeared in Country Strong — but was it Joni or Joan who said, “One role in a contrived film that happens to feature country musicians does not a folk singer make”? Oh, it was Bob Dylan! But he used a lot more metaphors.
Leighton donned this long, flowy skirt and cut a pair of bangs to perform songs from her new record at L.A.’s Troubador last night. (Okay, we’ll grant that this is a bit less shocking than Taylor Momsen‘s breast-baring behavior.) She also picked up an acoustic guitar for the occasion, and scrawled on its body were the words: “This machine kills fashion. (XOXO.)”
Why does this bother me so much? Well, for one, I’m a big jerk and I haven’t been getting a lot of sleep lately, but for two (two still comes after one?), it’s nothing short of offensive to co-opt one of the most pure and unostentatious forms of American music for the sake of seeming cool. In case you’re equally distressed by this image, here’s Joni Mitchell playing “Both Sides Now” in 1970:
