It seems that every few months there’s a story about celebrities learning about Internet memes — concerning themselves or others — and being tickled by this strange form of worship. But instead of Kirsten Dunst or Steven Spielberg acknowledging their own odd contributions to pop culture, this time it’s someone peripheral learning about an Internet meme for the first time.
In her new Glamour profile, Rachel McAdams is befuddled when the reporter tells her about the now-infamous Feminist Ryan Gosling meme starring her ex-co-star and ex-boyfriend:
GLAMOUR: I’ve heard you don’t read your press. Do you read about other people?
RACHEL MCADAMS: Not really, no.
GLAMOUR: So you’re not aware that Ryan Gosling has become a huge feminist icon?
RACHEL MCADAMS: Feminist icon? Wow! Is that real?
GLAMOUR: There are blogs upon blogs!
RACHEL MCADAMS: Oh my God, that’s great.
The article’s hook is that Rachel is so happily holed up in her Toronto home (bought with her Mean Girls paycheck) that she’s blissfully ignorant of many facets of Hollywood life. That apparently extends to the Internet and sites like ours, which were beyond amused when the “Hey Girl” meme became even slyer by invoking Derrida and gender constructs.
This makes us wish that Rachel and Ryan could’ve made it as a couple, but alas, that was not to be. When they broke up back in 2007, he said, “The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin’ and we called it a draw.” Not to mention that he ended up consoling his fans about the split instead of getting condolences.
