Yesterday saw The Great Reddit-Hulu Experiment: Hulu’s Assistant Editor Ben Collins invited Redditors to search through Hulu’s archives and update the Featured Content section with whatever videos struck their fancy. Today, Collins posted a playlist of the top 10 videos (voted for on Reddit through upvotes and karma), with an 11th “wild card” video featuring wacky Food Network star Alton Brown.
It really is a representative list of all that’s irreverent, witty, and ironic: It ranges from Arrested Development to The Daily Show to Carl Sagan‘s 1980 PBS special Cosmos. Because it’s a recommendation list, it makes sense that there would be some of the “new” classics included. That said, it’s clear that many people wanted more unexpected content, as Redditor sandwich_today deadpanned, I know the hivemind wants Arrested Development or Archer, but bringing Cosmos to Hulu’s front page does seem like reddit’s best option for improving humanity.
There were also those UK Redditors who wanted just to choose an error message to protest Hulu’s unavailability outside the United States, but ultimately no one followed that line of reasoning. Instead,we got Mystery Science Theater 3000: Horrors of Spider Island.
Of course, there were casualties. Some of the recommendations that didn’t make it on the final playlist:
- Spaced
- Firefly
- Futurama
- Perfect Strangers
- NewsRadio
- Daria
- Beavis & Butthead
- Double Dare
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve never seen the beloved Community episode “For A Few Paintballs More” — I’m off to change that. In the meantime, enjoy this ode to waffles:
