I’m not going to lie to you guys: this week’s episode of Medium almost lost me. The second Matt Letcher showed up as Dr. Erik Westphal, I promptly identified him as “Evil Lab Guy.” He barely had to open his mouth before I was positive that he was the one responsible for the terrifying virus being stolen from his lab.

As the episode went on, it was easy enough to discern his motive: he was upset about not receiving further funding to develop his anti-serum to the virus, so he created a panic in order to grease the wheels in Washington. If you look at the Open Mic from this episode, I figure this out at 9:32, which is way too early to know who did it and why. I like when Medium keeps me guessing, and this storyline did not.
However, the end of the episode, with the scenes between Lee and Lynn, and the final twists with Evil Lab Guy’s storyline, really won me over. Lee and Lynn’s relationship hasn’t always exactly been a fairytale romance, so when Bridgette dreamed that Lee would be sad when he tried to propose to Lynn, I don’t think anybody was terribly surprised.
This, however is when the surprises started happening to me. While it’s not entirely believable that Lynn would not only lie about being married this whole time (I mean, really. When you’re having a dude’s baby, isn’t that something you would think to mention?), or that she would lie about having dinner with the divorce lawyer instead of just telling Lee beforehand, I certainly didn’t see this coming.
While neither one of these characters could ever be considered “over-emotional,” they both did a great job with this entire scene. Between Lee’s resigned anger and sadness when he’s waiting for Lynn to break up with him, and the sweet, awkward proposal, it was a great way to welcome Lynn back into the storyline after largely being absent this season.
The ending with evil lab guy was pretty great too, although I would have liked to have seen Devalos (who has also been largely absent this season) in on Allison’s confrontation of ELG. However, seeing a blood-thirsty Allison getting so much pleasure out of ELG’s quite ironic death was pretty funny. In all, while this wasn’t my favorite episode of the season, the clever twists at the end and Lynn and Lee really saved it for me.

Do you know what is the name of the song that is played towards the end when Lynn and Lee are having their dinner (with the proposal)?
Thanks!
I really liked this episode and agree with your review. I liked both storylines. I was too surprised that Lynn was married and never mentioned it to Lee until now. Surprised he wasn’t that surprised and still proposed. She lied about the dinner too but I guess she is in politics. Loved the ending with Allison and the evil lab guy.
I guessed the lab guy was not as innocent as he was making out pretty quickly but the ending made up for my slight disappointment. It reminded me of the episode where Kelsey Grammar’s character ended up slipping in the shower.
My favourite parts of this episode were Scanlon with baby Leigh. (I loved seeing him all domestic, always nice to see fathers taking an active role in their family on television.)
Ample Joe/Allison fluff. I’ve been missing that this season.
Allison: That cough doesn’t sound good.
Joe: I don’t know why not. I’ve been practicing it all night.
Me too, although no time off for me. And I caught it from someone at work too. I love me some Joe and his humour.
I did wonder whether there was more to Bridgette’s dreams originally.
Lol, Linda! I loved the scenes with Joe and Allison bantering about being sick. Those are the moments that make Medium stand out from the other shows on TV in my book. Joe’s line about practicing his cough still cracks me up every time I think about it. The mystery wasn’t that great (although I did think it might be the FEMA pretty early on until the lab guy started telling Allison about his funding problem-then it clicked) but the ending saved it for me. All in all, the ep felt a little too CSI/NCIS for me, with the bioterror attack and the corporate/government race to stop the virus. It just didn’t feel like Medium to me, like they were reaching a little bit. Although I’m still not a big fan of Deputy Doll, I liked the scenes with her and Scanlon and the baby (wasn’t he so cute being all domestic?). The proposal scene was great and I cracked up when she pulled out the ring and basically told him to get down on his knee and propose to her right then. LMAO!! I thought it was sweet too the way he showed the ring to Allison before he gave it to Lynn and told her what his plans were. I love the way their friendship has developed since the start of the series. While this wasn’t one of my favorite episodes, it was still pretty good. Too bad the ratings sucked. Hopefully when the show comes back in January, they’ll get better. Fingers crossed, everybody.
I disagree, I thought this stories “evil” person was really good and well-written. I loved the scene between Lynn and Lee. I also really liked Allison and Joe being sick together, it really goes to show how much they are meant for each other on TV LOL
I do hope Medium stays for a season seven. The ratings will improve, I know they will. But don’t count on the first episode coming back after Christmas holidays to be high for ratings. That’s when everyone is just getting back into watching their TV shows. It’s almost 100 percent that half of the viewers will not realize that its coming back in January.
I loved this episode, possibly the best one of this season? I don’t know, I’ve loved every episode this season. The creator has really stepped into new territory this season, that’s what I like. Can’t wait for the new year episodes!!! It’s going to be interesting to see how Medium’s ratings are going to improve and get a season seven.
I loved the whole exchange between Joe and Allison about being sick, the line about the one degree fever cracked me up to!
I loved domestic Scanlon. I wouldn’t mind more of that but I only like Deputy Doll in small doses.
Caroline, the song was “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, it’s been on a few things I’ve watched in the past. One of their songs was also in the OC pilot. I forgot to answer that in my other comment.
The name of the song is Fade Into You by Mazzy Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWvEXChflEE)
Even though I enjoyed watching all the episodes this season (I love Medium so it’s a given I will watch it regardless of good or not so good episodes), overall I find they are lacking something; the family dynamics that I so enjoyed in the previous seasons and would cause me to re-watch the episodes ad nauseam.
There has been no love scene between Alison and Jo or much cuddling in bed all season. What’s going on there? Is there some off-screen problem? The most affectionate I have seen this them this season was in this episode. Yeah I understand that was partly due to her stroke but she appears to be back to normal. There’s also not enough interaction with Alison, Joe and the kids. I love all the family scenes and there are too few of them now. I really miss that part of Medium.
Devalos is also not around as much. It’s like most of the episodes are devoted to Alison single-handedly solving the crimes (with some input now and then from Scanlon) and the whole teamwork with Devalos and Scanlon is gone. Way too often now Alison seems to be taking liberties at confronting the criminal alone and revealing how they committed the crime without the knowledge/support of the DA’s office and backup protection from Scanlon. Previously you might see Devalos getting angry at her for acting without the office of the DA’s permission but he seems pretty much out of the picture these days.
Isn’t she afraid that the criminal will kill her or threaten to kill her and her family? I’m surprised that none of them has attempted to do that already.
I actually fell asleep on Medium this week (which is unheard of) . Fortunately I was recording it so when I woke up at the end of the show, I was able to rewind and watch it again. I wasn’t disappointed with Scanlon’s and Lynn’s storyline at the end and we actually got some real cuddling with Alison and Joe.
Medium has changed this season and I’m really missing the way it used to be.
Thank you! I knew that I had heard the song, but couldn’t place it, and it was driving me crazy
Thanks for identifying Fade Into You by Mazzy Star… love the song! It was perfect to tease the mood for that scene.
Hi ! I’m French and sadly, I didn’t caught the answer Lynn did to Scanlon’s proposal… I suppose Scanlon said “Not accustomed to public speaking as I am…” and then… Could someone help me ?
Thanks a lot =)
@Zann, I watched the clip again. Lynn says, “God, this better get better.”
La signification de sa réponse – elle espère que la demande en mariage deviendra plus mémorable, plus romantique.
Thanks a lot, Linda ! I guessed it was something like this but I wasn’t sure.
Is anyone annoyed that Lynn got her own engagement ring?
Like Lee didn’t know what to do ????
Hi! I wanted to know what is the song at the beginning of the episod, when the man is driving? I’ve the impression that it’s the voice of Alice Cooper but I’m not sure at all!
oh!!thank you for your answer!
