SAG Nominations: Yes For America, No For Ugly Betty

America Ferrera Second verse, same as the first.  Just as it was for the Golden Globes, Ugly Betty did not receive an ensemble nomination for Comedy Series from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but America Ferrera did nab a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

As happy as I am for Ferrera, I think this is a little unfair, Ugly Betty has been far better in season 3 than in season 2, and at times has returned to being one of the best shows on television (case in point, episode 3.09 – When Betty Met YETI).  However, I know it’s very hard to overcome a less-than-stellar reputation.

The SAG nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series almost exactly mirror the Golden Globes:

  • CHRISTINA APPLEGATE / Samantha Newly – “SAMANTHA WHO?” (ABC)
  • AMERICA FERRERA / Betty Suarez – “UGLY BETTY” (ABC)
  • TINA FEY / Liz Lemon – “30 ROCK” (NBC)
  • MARY-LOUISE PARKER / Nancy Botwin – “WEEDS” (Showtime)
  • TRACEY ULLMAN / Various Characters – “TRACEY ULLMAN’S STATE OF THE UNION” (Showtime)

Of course, the Screen Actors Guild has kind of lost its luster for me this year, seeing as how they threaten to ruin the entire entertainment industry with a strike.  Having a work stoppage over online residuals is so 2007.  Don’t they know there’s a recession on?

OK, I know it’s more serious than that, but the facts on the ground have changed since the Writers Guild strike.

Regardless, I can easily predict that Ugly Betty will not survive another strike shortened season.  The actors really need to think hard about this before they try to imitate the WGA.

Nevertheless, I’m happy for Ferrera.  One day, Vanessa Williams,Michael Urie, Becki Newton or Eric Mabius will walk away with an award as well.

the likes of SAG and the golden globes need to realise that as much as america gives a great performance as betty, this show doesn’t just revolve around her but of the rest of the ensemble cast. vanessa, michael, becki, ashley and eric to name deserve plaudits for their efforts too. and ugly betty just wouldn’t be the same without them.
