Samantha Who? 2.16 “The Sister” Recap

Samantha Who? 2.16 “The Sister”
Air Date: July 2, 2009
Recap & Discussion

Samantha is stunned to learn that she has an aunt and a grandmother, although no one has mentioned either of them because of a longstanding family feud over an heirloom.

This was a pretty good episode, I think!! I loved Regina’s messed up family!

Samantha Who? Highlights:

  • The episode starts off with a reference to how you can’t choose your family… and shows Regina taking Sam shopping and for a make-over… to look just like her!
  • Regina and Sam run into someone named Amy at the mall… turns out, she’s Regina’s sister. They seemed very cold together!
  • Regina calls her sister a terrible person and tells Sam she’s better off not knowing her. Sam argues that maybe she’s a missing piece in the puzzle of who she is.
  • Sam: “Why don’t you want me to know my family?” Regina: “The same reason I don’t want you to have a gun. Because you could hurt yourself.
  • Regina goes home and Sam decides to chase down Aunt Amy. It’s not long before Amy joins Dena, Andrea and Sam for for shots and dinner
  • Andrea and Dena both agree with Sam – they love Amy! “To our new mom”, salutes Andrea
  • Andrea has plans to go to watch Tony Dane play – she hopes to get on the jumbotron. Dena goes by Sam’s to watch, but it’s just Dena and Todd
  • The crowd Boo’s at Andrea when they see her on the jumbotron!! They think she’s a jinx on the game.
  • Amy comes to Sam’s place and complements her pottery – she collects from the same artist. Having no connection to the piece, Sam gives it to her.

Recap continues below…

  • Regina and Howard have dropped by unexpectedly. Sam tries to usher Amy out of the building by the stairs.
  • Regina wants to know why Sam didn’t answer her phone. She smells Amy’s perfume.
  • Turns out, the bowl was a family heirloom. Regina says Amy only became Sam’s friend to get that bowl. It’s “the bowl”, a big deal in this family. Something that’s feuded over.
  • Sam refuses to apologize to Regina. But Dena is the unlikely source of the solution – she has a bowl just like the heirloom! Dena will sell it to her ;)
  • Frank and Todd are both betting against Tony Dane, since Andrea is his jinx. Turns out Andrea’s not at the game and Tony is doing well! Todd encourages Andrea to go to the game ;)
  • Sam gives Regina the bowl and lies about how she got it back.
  • Howard freaks out seeing the bowl - he has to go to his ‘happy place’ when he thinks of Regina’s family
  • Regina can’t let Amy be the “bigger person” for returning the bowl. She’s going to give it back! But it’s not ‘the bowl’!!
  • Sam’s lie falls apart. And yet they still try to fight over the bowl!
  • Another woman walks in… it’s Regina & Amy’s mother. Sam has a grandmother!!
  • Todd’s plan worked – Andrea jinxed the game. Tony tells her it’s true – that when she’s there, he knows she’s the only one who knows he’s gay and could ruin his career
  • Andrea shares her deepest secret with Tony – that she used to have hair all over her face. It took years of electrolysis to get it off! She shares this as a measure of trust.
  • Sam is freaking out that she has a grandmother! Sam tries to hug her, but she’s a cold woman.
  • Regina and Amy try to get their mother to decide the fate of the bowl. Sam recalls that the bowl ordeal all started because her grandmother decided to leave her ‘crap’ there. I guess she never gave either of her girls anything, so Regina cherished it and Amy grew jealous.
  • Sam tries to tell Amy & Regina they’re being silly fighting over a bowl. The sisters then fight over who ‘got everything’ growing up.
  • The grandmother: “Stop it, I loved you both the same. I may have only had enough love for one daughter, but you each got half, so what’s the big deal?
  • Sam tries to tell her grandmother that more love from her could have prevented this squabbling
  • Grandmother: “Look, they may have had only half a mother, but at least they had 2 Daddy’s
  • Regina and Amy discover their Dad may not have been their Dad. There was “another rooster in the henhouse”, their mother says. That man, their Uncle Luther. Their mother has no idea which is the real dad.
  • To stop the yelling, Sam breaks both bowls on the floor. Sam says the bowl was poison, it was hatred. She doesn’t need a bowl to know her mother loves her.
  • On that bright note, Sam hears her great-grandmother yelling down the stairs! Regina says she really doesn’t want to meet that one! ;)
  • Sam thanks her mother for the fresh start. And Regina gives Sam ‘the bowl’, which she’d kept. She’d bought another fake to return. Regina tells Sam to keep passing it on in the family, $9 bowl or not ;)
