"Samantha Who?" Cancelled

Despite indications last week that Samantha Who? (starring Gilmore Girls’ Melissa McCarthy) would return for a third season, it now looks like the series has been cancelled.

ABC was planning to renew the series, which was yanked prior to all of Season airing, with a reduced budget of $500,000 per episode (achieved by filming with multiple cameras to speed up production).

However, because the network has 10 new series planned for the Fall, 4 of which are comedies, that left Samantha Who? with no ideal timeslot. The network typically heavily promotes it’s biggest and/or newest shows, leaving Samantha Who? with no promotion as well. The lack of good time slot (what dropped the ratings in the series to begin with) and promotion would likely not help the series any. The network and studio therefore decided to cancel the series.

It seems there’s a growing trend at these big tv networks to put their budgets behind creating lots of new shows and heavily promoting them. It’s rare now to see a series get picked up for a second season, let alone a third. As many of the “heavy hitter” series’ can’t last forever, this pattern may someday soon spell for trouble.

There is no indication if the remainder of Season 2 will be aired. So sad. I quite enjoyed this series.

And ABC also jettisoned my favorite new show The Unusuals as well. So annoying.

Yes, its a shame this show is over.
Because it was a really good show, but how far can a show about an amnesiac (Is that what you call them :s) go?

At some time she has to stop remembering things and move on with her new life.

    Its still pretty annoying.
Whatever will our ‘Sookie St.James’ do next?

Have to say I had mixed feelings on the show. I loved it to start with and throught it was a fantastic concept but as it went on it seemed that every episode was very samey. shame though as it had great potential and loved seeing melisa in it.

I loved this show Samantha Who. I can’t believe they cancelled it. Please being it back!!!!
I became very frustrated the second season-the show was on for a coupld of weeks-then replaced by some special etc-it was hit or miss to get to view it. I never new when to set the DVR to record etc. Then, the season ends, I hear it is cancelled, then see two more shows entirely by accident that were new…..completelt confusing schedule they gave this show. If it were given a time slot every week and KEPT in that timeslot to keep and gain viewers, it would be beating out shows like Grey’s Anatomy etc. Why would ABC keep a ridiculous shoe like How to Win a Japenese Game Show, and cancel Samantha Who, the best comedy they have had, in my opinion, in years!!!!!!!!!!
    Bring it back!!!!
