Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez told the New York Daily news that a viewer and once-Callie fan sent her hate mail for playing a lesbian on the show. The viewer stated that she would no longer be watching the show because “Callie went down that road.”
Ramirez’s reaction?
“[It] made me sad. But in my family, my aunts are Catholic, and they watch it and are so supportive! I’m not one to tell people what to think, but I would like to encourage people to open their hearts because it’s 2009, and we’ve elected an African-American President. Come on guys, let’s get over it.”
I love her attitude and her message. After all, she’s been a face and a voice for GLAAD for the past couple of years now.
I know a lot of you haven’t been into this storyline and wish Callie would return to heteroland. But I don’t think hate mail is the answer.

Hate is never the answer it just makes the problem bigger. The only way we are going to learn to get over this is to continue to see gays and lesbians portrayed in a real way on tv. Not as clowns or comic relief or freaks but as the normal average people that we are. While the whole Erica/Callie story was flawed in many ways it was also very well done and done realistically in many ways. I hope the writers will continue to show homosexuals and bisexuals in a respectful and realistic way.
I think it is kind of drastic that a fan of Grey’s would do that. It just isn’t right that people still act that way in this day and age. Some people can be so close-minded.
The thing that gets me about people who voice such hatred towards the homosexuals is that they really don’t offer any hopeful alternative. Seriously, if I was a lesbian and someone told me how wrong I was and how much they couldn’t support me because of it, would I really want to give up my lifestyle for that of heterosexuals? Some people just don’t think about what their actions do to others
I just wish people would not care who one choose to be with… man women anyone anything….that is a persons personal choose…
I am glad that greys is incorporating it into the show…
ignorance like that is disgusting to me. i dont understand how ppl can be so hateful. racism is definatly learned. were all humans and we need to show the very same compassion that we expect other ppl to show us.
