Sara Ramirez Talks Body Image with Glamour Health & Fitness

Sara Ramirez is just one of those actresses that you can’t help but love and admire. And now she gives us yet another reason to keep her on our favorite celebrities list. The Grey’s doc recently talked to Glamour Health & Fitness about the subject of body image, in an article titled: “Getting Over Myself: I’m a Size 12 in a Size 0 Town.”

The article is a first-person account of Ramirez’s struggle with her weight, from childhood to adulthood, and how she dealt with it, while also being catapulted into the spotlight from an early age. She talks about starving herself in order to get auditions for television, and the pressure she endured to go thinner in order to fit into the expectations of the industry.

She also talks about how getting cast in Spamalot helped to get her into shape and start taking better care of herself.

In regards to Grey’s Anatomy, she says that she gained twenty-five pounds in four months and she ended up hiring a trainer to help her feel healthy again. But that no one on the show ever pressured her to lose weight. And that instead, she got to “dance around half-naked” in her underwear. “I went to Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer, and said, ‘Do you really want me to do this? Why me? I have so much cottage cheese here and there!’ She just looked at me and said, ‘Work it.’ That was all I got from her. And sure enough, doing the scene helped me get over a lot of my issues. I had to accept my body.”

While she admits that she still has days when she looks in the mirror and thinks critically about her body, she also states that she likes to think realistically about it all. “I’ve learned to stop myself and ask, am I being realistic? What do I love about my body? What am I grateful for? The answers to those questions remind me that I’m very blessed.”
