Dilana is the new bad ass rocker chick on the scene. Covered in tattoos and piercings with a killer deep raspy voice she’s sure to leave an impression. Her latest album release is ‘InsideOut’ which hit the shelves November 17th. Included on this record is her hit single ‘Holiday‘ which debuts just how rocker she really is. It starts out with a southern twang and drops into some serious riffs.
Dilana’s sound reminds me of Pink mixed with Brody Dalle from The Distillers/Spinnerette who she is on tour with. I wonder who influenced who? Either way that is a sick line up. Tour dates here!
ShePlaysMusic caught up with Dilana to ask her a few questions about her hometown Johannesburg, South Africa, her Hollywood experiences, and of course her top 10 female musicians!

SPM – Tell me a little bit about your experience in Johannesburg, South Africa and how that has influenced your music.
D – oh soooo much to tell I dunno where to begin. Let’s just say that growing up there was exactly what made me tough and street smart! For sure, a perfect recipe for being driven and ambitious and without a doubt, provided an overflow of inspiration and influence for songwriting, and life In general!
SPM – Who are your top 10 favorite female musicians?
D – janis joplin, stevie nicks, tina turner, chrisie hynde, joan jett, linda perry, cyndi lauper, sheryl crowe, sarah mc laughlin, pink, skin (skunk anasi), sarah bettens (K’s Choice), sass jordan, bjork, beth hart…ooops! Went over 10 but there are so damn many!!!!
SPM - Since moving to the U.S. what would you say has been your craziest experience and what city was it in?
D – BEING IN HOLLYWOOD for the 1st time!! It felt so surreal, some days when I’m driving down sunset, I STILL have to pinch myself! I always thought it was a lifetime away n so out of MY reach to even set my feet there! And then, auditioning for tommy lee, gilby clarke, jason newstead and dave navarro for Rockstar Supernova…getting a standing O from them was REALLY CRAZY!!!
SPM – What has been the biggest challenge you’ve encountered in your musical career?
D – being HEARD! On every level. It still is!
SPM – What is your favorite tattoo that you have and why did you get it?
D - the one down my spine. Japanese symbols saying SURVIVOR. I think the reason is obvious.
SPM - Name 5 things you couldn’t live without.
D - my laptop, my i-pod, my phone, pain, friends!
SPM - Where have you been, what are you doing, and where are you going?
D – I’ve been to hell and seems like I’m on my way back. I’m currently in SC working on a feature film called ANGEL CAMOUFLAGED. It’s my 1st movie and I’m playing the lead role, Scottie Ballantyne. It’s very exciting! Best part is, we’re using about 9 of MY songs in it, 7 of which are brand new and written for the film. Starring also, James Brolin, Carlos Bernard, Warick Grier, Tessie Santiago and PATTY SMYTHE as my aunt lol!! Dorected by Michael Givens. Should be out summer 2010.
I’m going home (SA) for the 1st time in 7,5 years to do a small acoustic tour in dec. excited as hell. Next year I’m hoping to do a bunch of college scene tours and promoting my record! Also doing a tour through dubai, afghanistan and canada feb n march! So much happening my head is spinning. MAYBE I will get a manager to help…
