Singer Chevonne is on the cusp of hitting it big, thanks to the mash-up of Real Housewife Ramona Singer walking the runway on Perez Hilton, featuring Chevonne’s song “Catcall.”
Listening to Chevonne belt out the song’s lyrics, which describe what it’s like for a woman to get catcalled while she’s walking down the street, she sounds all woman. But take one look at her avant garde appearance, and you might do a double take. Is she a she or a drag queen? Actually, Chevonne describes herself as a “straight girl drag queen,” something we didn’t even know existed. It kind of seems like the way a female artist would describe herself instead of just comparing herself to Lady Gaga. (In fact, Chevonne was one of four finalists in the running to tour with Gaga on her MonsterBall Tour.)
But Chevonne’s over the top style is more drag than Gaga. Her exaggerated make-up and wigs even give her an almost mannish look. Why would a woman want to make herself look like a man dressing up as a woman — and the most comical, exaggerated type of woman to boot? Drag queens say they can dress as a woman better than a woman, so is Chevonne sending the message that she can dress as a man dressed as a woman better than a man? Wait, we’re confused. Check out her “Catcall” video to see what we mean:
Do you think a straight girl drag queen can exist? Do you think it’s brave to dress in drag as a woman, or a way to hide the feminine features you’re not comfortable with? What do you think of Chevonne’s song “Catcall”?
