The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 has been out in theaters since August 6th. So far, the movie has pulled in over $24 million (the first movie had $16 million in the same time period). The sequel, starring Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively, has done really well so far!
Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie 64%, which is not so bad overall. And what are other people saying?
- From Jessica Reaves of the Chicago Tribune:
"Like its predecessor, "Sisterhood 2" is based on two radical ideas: namely, that young women’s stories are about more than the pursuit of men, and that happiness isn’t something someone else gives you—it’s something you have to find for yourself." - Gregory Kirschling of EW writes:
"even cynics might concede that, again, four capable actresses have pulled off a relatively rare thing: They’ve convinced us they’re an honest-to-God movie sisterhood." - Teresa Wiltz of the Washington Post writes:
"It’s refreshing to see young women portrayed as something other than the hot chicks in the latest blockbuster." - From James Berardinelli of Reel Views:
"As chick flicks go, this is one men can attend with the expectation that they might just enjoy experiencing two hours alongside these down-to-earth, appealing characters." - From Jane Boursaw of FilmGecko:
"I loved the first movie, and it’s great seeing the girls back together"

Very good comment, Wonder! As for me I must wait and wait before seeing the film. However I hope Alexis will find her way through the difficult business she has chosen. And I think that doing one or two more years in GG would have done great for her. But things are like that, competition is fierce in her profession. Yet, she looks very American to me, and I think she can fit in without any problem. As to fit into her biological background and play role according to, one thing is sure: her education is chiefly an American one. So to fit into her South American background could be more difficult than she thinks, and that could be the real hurdle. But she’s still young, she is intelligent, and she will learn how to deal with her two or three backgrounds! The Norwegian one having good potential!
The critics seem to be neutral about Alexis’s performance. Many blame it on the Lena storyline, calling it the least interesting of the four. I can’t say I blame them – after all it really only comes down to which boy-toy she wants more. The most interesting comment came from the Chicago Tribune, “As for Bledel, I can’t decide if she’s an incredibly subtle actor, or if she’s only capable of two facial expressions (vague confusion and vague happiness).”
A frustration of being an Alexis fan is that I don’t feel like she has had a good storyline to work with for years. I’m not excited about the movies in production either, but she does not seem to have the luxury of options. In an interview, she said “I think it’s a little tricky because, in the States, when they want a Latin actress, they want someone who looks sort of stereotypically Latin. But I think I can get away with playing a Spanish or Argentine character. I really hope I get to do that someday.” However, how many scripts come along requiring that set of qualities? I feel like someone would have to write something specifically for her.
As for me, I liked the movie. I was laughing a lot and so were the people around me. I don’t think the critics are giving enough credit to the cinematography. There is a lot to be said for all of the eye candy (whether you like girls or guys) and the Santorini scenes are beautiful on the big screen. I also believe that the actors did what they could with the script.
well,the film won´t come out here in germany,only on dvd(?),so i have to wait…and wait..and wait…^^
so how is the movie??
what do you think about it?
CHARLESTON: Ms. Gilmore, we are not here to be fair, we are here to educate.
NW: One of a hundred of actresses only may achieve her dream!
CHARLESTON: My goodness you do like to throw fits in your family.
NW: Yes, and that’s just about the way we fight!
CHARLESTON: Ms. Gilmore, everything you said… is true ….. We do set impossible standards … competitive children. However that is life and that is Chilton.
NW: One thing is sure: Life is already an impossible standard that we tend to believe for granted, forgetting its miraculous mystery. So we do not really have to give any explanation for this, or an explanation for that, but act! And be ready for that!
CHARLESTON: [getting up] Ms. Gilmore, rules are rules. When you’re late, you forfeit the right to take the test.
NW: Life is full of rules, or laws. The timing is the only answer in everything! Before, it is often too soon, after it may be too late. Between may be the true, where we may find the way to take the best!
CHARLESTON: My grandmother and 1st cousin died. My sister took my report to school…
NW: The problem is to know how to deal with the miscellaneous, or hazards that happen in life. For nobody really knows how the life is going to be for sure. We can only try to do our very best for the time being.
Indian used to say that an encounter with an animal in a wood could be a sign! One thing is sure: a little event in a life can change a Life for ever…
So my point is: if unfortunately, for one actress we love, so many we could love didn’t achieve their dreams, we are really happy for those who succeed in doing so and hope the very best for the others.
Thanks Rory!
Personally I don’t like how much this movie strays from the books.
