Smallville 8.06 "Prey" - review

Smallville episode 8.06 “Prey
Airdate: October 23, 2008

(*GASP* I can’t believe I forgot to post this! So here goes… and don’t forget,  the last question I asked Sam Witwer in my interview from last week is at the end of the post. His answer was very interesting.)

The episode Smallville “Prey” opens at the Isis Foundation, and Chloe Sullivan is talking with her meteor-powered anonymous group, who come out of their closets for the first time to admit to having abilities. Some are skeptical and afraid and others are hopeful about coming together and knowing they’re not alone, grateful for a second chance. One of the new groupie didn’t get another chance when a black blurry force knocked her down and brutally killed her.

Smallville-ep8.06-prey-02 Meanwhile, Clark works overtime at the Daily Planet and listens in to the police radio. With a newfound ’savior complex’, Clark wants to respond to each and every call. The Martian Manhunter takes residence in Metropolis PD too, even without his powers, so he can be nearer to Kyle in case the boy needs him. What the Manhunter told Clark should have sunk in – “You can’t help everyone, Clark” but it didn’t.

Someone was killing and maiming people so fast inside a club that Clark and get didn’t there in time. He finds an unconscious Davis covered with blood. Davis refuses help from Clark or anyone else. Later, when Davis showers he finds no trace of injury and the blood all over him isn’t his.

Smallville-ep8.06-prey-04Unable to prevent the bloodbath at the club, Clark’s takes out his frustrations at Chloe and her Anonymous group, suspecting that it might be someone from the group. Now that was brazen of Clark and presumptuous. And that’s always been his problem. He goes charging in – whether it’s to Lois, Lex, or Chloe – and accuses them of things. Most of the time he’s right, but he’s really got to learn to do it subtly. I don’t know if that’s what makes him a good reporter, but at the moment with Chloe, he wasn’t being a friend. What’s even more betraying was getting the names of her group and passing them on to the Martian Manhunter (who has taken a new name and job as detective of Metropolis PD).

Smallville-ep8.06-prey-07Meanwhile, Davis Bloome was doing his own investigation, into himself. Sam Witwer was brilliant in the scene with Allison Mack, when Davis confesses to Chloe that he is the killer. The anguish in his face, the fear and devastation that his life was all a lie, priceless! And to think that he couldn’t even remember any of the horrible things.

In the end of the episode, Davis sort of had his redemption when the black phantom turned out to be someone from the Isis’ club. But was the boy merely a vessel to throw suspicion away from Davis?

Smallville-ep8.06-prey-05 Last week, Sam Witwer was more than happy to talk to me about his role as Davis Bloome/Doomsday, so I asked him two last questions: What happens to Doomsday after this episode?

“Sam had to think about this one, since he felt he was going to share too true spoilers. But he did say they’ve shot quite a bit after that, so that means, we will see more of Sam Witwer in this series. But I wasn’t going to let him go just yet, so I pressed on: Will we see more of Davis going back to his old paramedic life?

“We’ve seen quite a bit more of Davis and he’s still wrestling with a few issues,” Sam begins. “But certain things are resolved or we think they’re resolved by the end of this episode, so he has a very different take on it after this. ”

I really wanted to know if Doomsday was gone for good, and if Davis is free from the phantom. Says Sam –

“(Davis”) has got a lot on his plate, I’ll tell you that. He’s got a lot of things that he’s dealing with and if you shoot down fifty percent of it, he’s still got a full schedule in terms of what he emotionally has to parse through.”

Aha, so maybe we haven’t seen the last of Doomsday yet.

Next on Smallville tonight, episode 7.08 “Identity” explores Clark’s option to adopt a supehero name and alter-ego. I suggest Superman.
