Smallville: Allison Mack on Chloe's dark future

Smallville character Chloe Sullivan has always been known as the trusted, level-headed friend, one who is not afraid to make the right decisions as she follows up on her stories and leads. Allison Mack is the actress who has brought this character to life since the inception of the series and she talks to TV Guide about the changes that are happening in Chloe’s persona and life.

Her own woman

The chemistry between Allison Mack and Tom Welling has always been evident to fans, and hopefuls still want their Smallville characters to become more than friends. Asked how Allison and Tom got that chemistry to work, the actress admitted they won’t work at it at all. “There’s an affection for each other – I adore him, and I think there’s a similar fondness for me back – and that comes from “growing up” together.” The two have been on the show the longest, and the fondness stays strong from season to season. “That isn’t something we have to rekindle. It will always exist between us.”

However, their characters are a different story this season. Chloe doesn’t work at the Daily Planet anymore, and she devotes her time to getting the Isis Foundation thriving, as well as Smallville-ep8.02-plastique-06sidelining with Justin Hartley’s Green Arrow. Chloe now wants a separate, independent life away from Clark Kent. Allison says Chloe is tired of just running around and doing whatever she thinks Clark needs. “Well, she’s come to have superpowers, she’s been killed about four times [Laughs], she’s getting married, she’s been infected by Brainiac. I think she has come into her own in a way that she never has before… She’s grown into her own woman.”

That infection by Brainiac happened in the final hours of season 7, when Brainiac tried to do Lana on Chloe but was aborted when Chloe began giving off a strange light. Brainiac was so taken aback that he cried “what are you?!”. What, or who indeed is the new Chloe? Brainiac has altered some of Chloe’s abilities and made her ridiculously intelligent. Now, she she is able to process information in a way that is beyond anything anyone could imagine. Not just a super-hacker, Chloe can actually “relate to computers in a way she never was able to before,” explains Allison.

Evil tendencies of Kryptonian origin

But apparently, Brainiac didn’t alter just her mind. Like the interactive construct, Allison is now pulled into the dark side, and somehow connects with Sam Witwer’s Davis Bloome. Chloe is “struggling with this pull towards Davis and these dark, evil tendencies and a want to destroy things, which is very much Brainiac.”

Uh-oh, that doesn’t bode well for our goody-two-shoes. Allison admits Chloe is still going with the tried-and-true Jimmy but there is definitely an attraction with Davis that she can not explain. “There’s an attraction to Davis that neither of us can understand, one that comes from a Krypton sort of place.”

Going sinister

Smallville-ep8.03-toxic-07 What else can Allison add about Davis and his descent to Doomsday?

“It’s going to take a little while before she actually starts evaluating that there might be something wrong with him. She’s defending him right now, in a pretty major way.” Admitting that there might be something amiss with Davis means Chloe would have to recognize that there was something negative about her.

Is Chloe going to be completely sinister like Doomsday?

“She was a very good soul with very good intentions, and she still strives to be that, but she’s not necessarily succeeding anymore.”

I wonder that Allison means by that. TV Guide gets the actress talking some more in a second interview, so I’ll keep my eyes open for this one. I know Chloe fans would love to hear about their fave Smallville actors.
