Televisionwithoutpity summarizes the “Freak” episode in a nutshell. And you get to read it here.
The episode was directed by Michael Rosenbaum. For a first try it was quite good. Traditional directing but good feel for what’s important and takes the audience deeper into understanding Clark’s world.
So, clearly Lana still has feelings for Clark. She suspected that Clark might be meteor-infected and “someone who saves a life every single day”. She actually hinted to Clark too, that she didn’t mind that he’s infected after all… now if only he knew that at the beginning of their relationship, they might not have grown apart. She’s also beginning to protect him from Lex… what a way to start a marriage huh? Episode before “Freak” she ran to ex-boyfriend Clark’s home and barn to hide from a stalker. Not to Lex, but to Clark. Now, she’s getting soft spot again for Clark. In “Freak” she volunteers to pay for the Tobiah’s operation to protect Clark’s identity. But then does she truly deeply madly love him, or is her thirst for the mysterious Clark Kent the real driving force to her actions?
Of course when Lana confesses to Clark that it’s ok with her to find him infected, hello! What do you think an ex-boyfriend will feel knowing that there still might be mutual undercurrent feelings… As Chloe challenges Clark, “going to their wedding will signal that you’re moving on. For Lana, Lex and your sake”. Obviously he’s not over her, so I wonder if he’ll go to her wedding in ‘March’?
Lex, on the otherhand, is also getting farther entangled into the dark side. Oh, we know he’s a great liar, but he truly cares for Lana too. And that what makes him more menacing and pitiful. That he loves Lana so much that he will do everything for her, and yet the lure of power may even be greater that he will hide his true intentions from his future wife. It’s that same twisted heart that drove Anakin Skywalker into becoming Dark Vader.
Chloe, now she probably is the most pure-hearted of them all. Purer than Clark I would say. We know she still likes him, maybe as a friend now but he was her first crush/unrequited love. And still, she’s been trusting and protective of him. She understands him better than he does himselft sometimes and doesn’t hesitate to tell him so. That’s why Clark values her frienship so much. He can trust her not just with his secrets but also his emotions. Now, isn’t that a recipe for a lasting permanent relationship?
Clark gets to use his superpower of heat-vision in this episode, like a laser too! Which was cool. Once more he comes to the aid of a friend; in fact two – Chloe and the blind Tobiah. Once more he deflects Lana’s curiosity and pushes her away. Understandably perhaps since she’s almost a married woman. But with each episode of Smallville, and on his way to maturing as the future Superman, we find that Clark, though Kriptonian in blood and being, is very much human in nature. He’s broken and imperfect. Much like the rest of us.
