Smallville episode 8.01 “Odyssey“
Airdate: September 18, 2008
When season 7 ended, Lex Luthor had found a way to control Clark Kent. And as season 8 unfolds, we find that Jor-El’s back-up, in case his son becomes too powerful for the world, is to control his son by stripping him of his powers. The Fortress disappears and along with it, Lex and Clark.
With Lex’s disappearance, new Luthorcorp CEO Tess Mercer steps in. Lex’s stand-in was so secret that even his exec didn’t know about her, but Lex picked the right choice. Ms. Mercer has more than a schoolgirl crush on her boss. She thinks he’s a god.
The Justice League banded together to look for Clark, and rescued Boy Scout from a Russian gangster. Next order of business is saving Chloe, who is held by Lex’s lab rats. Turns out, Chloe’s new set of powers make hacking a child’s play and Lex’s minions are using her to track the Justice League members. A powerless Clark gets a near-death experience that changes him forever, and gets him to embracing his destiny.
The new producers and writers have done a really good job with the episode. There’s a sense that Clark’s transition into Superman will move a lot quicker now. Giving Chloe different powers, sans healing, takes her out of Clark Kent’s personal rescue squad. The Justice League figure big time as the mythology unravels. The main cast get into their roles as fish takes to water, but we’re really missing Michael Rosenbaum. No Lex Luthor allows other villains to appear in the picture, and of course the writers had to work around “searching for Lex”. If Michael Rosenbaum didn’t leave the series, the writers would have to tie in the Lex from Smallville and that of the greater Superman story. Overall, I’m excited for what the season holds.
What we now know:
- A blue diamond (kryptonite?) was left at the excavation site and gets into Tess Mercer’s hand. Could it be from the Fortress?
- The Martian Manhunter loses his powers to save Clark.
- As a nod to “Superman Returns”, the sun can bring the son of Krypton back to life!
- The Justice League comes to town and expect them to help Clark along the way this season.
Next week, episode 8.02 “Plastique” introduces Davis Bloom, and Chloe helps a new girl get back to her feet. Get scoops on the rest of Smallville season 8 episodes here.

hey you guys!
the discription up here couldn´t be more perfect… and yes the premier episode rocked!
but I wonder if those Luthorcorp´s guys (the ones who were holding Chloe) will become a threat for CK´s secret as long as they know about the traveller thing? I can´t barely wait for PLASTIQUE!!! let´s see what´s gonna happen
Hey guys that blue diamond in the Briefcase that Tess opens up isn’t kryptonite. It’s the crystal from the 3 elements that makes up the Fortress so that clark will somehow be able to rebuild again.
hopefully soon and Jor-El will probably flame him for disobeying again ahahhaa
The rating for this premiere very very LOW(4,3)! a lot lower than lanacentric wrath(5,2) or any previous lana episodes!that`s what happen when the most phenomenal character left the show!
I’m not judging the 8th season. it could be the last…its sort of weird not seeing Lex in season 8. Regardless of how the show ends…maybe they should ask Michael to come back for the series finale. I wouldn’t mind seeing some old faces like Pete, Mama Martha Kent, and even and dream that has Papa Jonathan Kent in it. But however the show ends…the one thing I hope that happens is we finally see the “S” on the chest of Clark Kent…AND LET HIM FLY.
I was kinda disappointed with the way they jettisoned the whole ‘control of the traveller’ storyline. They just blew it off with the usual smallville catchall; It was Jor-El’s fault, move on…
Hopefully when they bring Lex back it will get a proper resolution.

S8 HAS THE LOWEST RATED PREMIERE OF ALL SEASON!…..and TW still insist to do sesason 9!
James, you’re right! I totally forgot about those crystals. Hmm, this means Clark will rebuild The Fortress (he’s got to, right).
I think the show get better each year.i have been a fan since day one and i hope it keep going
no kristin no big rating!s9?WTF!like 8 years not long enought!TW is a type cast!
Um season 8 did not kick off with a bang. I couldn’t get into without Lex & Lana. The whole romance between Clark and Lois is sickening! The writers had them fight like brother & sister, besides there is NO CHEMISTRY between Tom Welling and Erica Durance!!!!
I’ve decided to stop watching, so disappointed my fav show has lost me as a viewer. Due to poor ratings I see I’m not the only one.
