SMALLVILLE 9.01 Premiere “Savior"
Airdate: September 25, 2009
It looks like Smallville is going downhill! Oh, I’m not talking about the series getting worse because it’s not. SMALLVILLE has definitely improved significantly since the new execs took over last season. Clark at the Daily Planet, Lana saying goodbye, Lex murdered (apparently), Doomsday, Lois and the phone booths, and then Jimmy dying in Chloe’s arms… all these major plots from last season worked so well in Smallville’s favor that perfectly set up the darker mood of season nine.
Previously in season 8, Oliver admitted that he set off the explosion that killed Lex Luthor. And Clark just hated Oliver for that – he doesn’t believe in the death penalty – to the point that he alienates Green Arrow from their fledgling league. And, this was a great tie-in to why the Green Arrow dislikes joining Superman’s JLA, but that’s in the comics. So for opening night, Oliver will continue down a dark road.
Meanwhile, Chloe is now a widower, poor girl. She didn’t even get to her honeymoon. After being possessed by Brainiac for most of season eight, Chloe forms a bond with Davis Bloome-Doomsday and ended up being the only one who can temper the beast inside him. Of course Davis thought she’s falling for him when girl-Friday Chloe was doing it all for Clark. Well, Davis would have none of that, even though he practically owes his freedom from Doomsday to her! Davis and Jimmy kill each other and Clark got there too late to stop the bloodshed. Grieving (and paranoid?) as she is, Chloe will beg Clark to go back in time to save Jimmy. And his refusal will drive a wedge into their friendship.
And Clark will blame himself for not saving Jimmy’s life the first time. And Oliver’s words will get through to him that he’s such a softie and should have killed Davis Bloome/Doomsday when he had the chance. Clark now thinks that it’s his humanity that makes him weak. So he’s saying good-bye to Clark Kent. When the new season comes, Clark will tell Jor-El that he is ready to start his training, but Jor-El will send him back to Metropolis to cut ties with Lois before he can begin. And that’s really interesting, because it would now seem that Clark has very strong feelings for Lois! Can he sever ties to the one person he’ll fall in love again someday (in the movies)? But what’s this about the “S” ? Clark has a “S” carved on his shirt!
And then of course, Lois Lane (Erica Durance). She disappeared at the very end of last season when she took the Legion ring. I’m not sure where she went in time (or space), but apparently Lois does come back to the present without any memory of ever vanishing! And while investigating a monorail crash, Lois will meet John Corben (aka Metallo; guest star Brian Austin Green), a new reporter at The Daily Planet. And we know who John Corben’s alter-ego is.
And then there’s Zod (Callum Blue) who didn’t come alone.
And below, read the official description from CW for the premiere episode of SMALLVILLE Season Nine titled “Savior”. And check out Kryptonsite for the rest of the photos!
BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN (“TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES”) GUEST STARS AS JOHN CORBEN — Clark (Tom Welling) tells Jor-El he’s ready to start his training, but Jor-El sends him back to Metropolis to cut ties with Lois before he can begin. Chloe (Allison Mack) is shocked when Lois (Erica Durance) suddenly reappears after having been missing for weeks, but Lois has no recollection of vanishing into thin air with the Legion ring. While investigating a monorail crash, Lois meets John Corben (guest star Brian Austin Green), a new reporter at The Daily Planet, with a negative attitude toward the Red-Blue Blur. Chloe begs Clark to use the Legion ring to go back in time to save Jimmy, but he refuses, driving a wedge into their friendship. Meanwhile, Oliver (Justin Hartley) continues down a dark road, and Zod (Callum Blue) arrives at the Luthor mansion. Kevin Fair directed the episode written by Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders (#3X5251).
