If you’ve tuned into NBC in the last few months, even for a second, you’re at least vaguely aware of a new show premiering the day after the Super Bowl called Smash. Analyzing the newcomer based on a fleeting promo we can learn the series will have singing, dancing, and Marilyn Monroe impersonators.
Smash actually looks pretty interesting; it chronicles the attempts of two Broadway hopefuls (played by American Idol’s Katherine McPhee and real Broadway star Megan Hilty) to get cast in a new musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Until it proves itself it will most likely be described as “Like Glee, but,” and I’m hopping the distinction is a coherent plot line.
Some will catch the pilot from their spot on the couch, but for those who want to experience the show as more of an event, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is offering a screening and a meet and greet with the cast this Thursday night for the bargain price of $2,500. I’m not sure if it’s the allure of “being there from the start” in a big way or the fact that all the money is going to the charitable organization NBC’s Smash: Make a Musical organization, but the tickets are already sold out.
There’s a wait-list, but you should probably start drawing up some back-up plans to make the premiere night special. Make a playbill banner, insist your guests wear Broadway show shirts, and frame some of your childhood artwork. It’ll be almost like you really did get a seat at the Met.
