W magazine has a little preview of what we can expect from the November issue where Brad Pitt took photos of Angelina Jolie and the kids. They’re all in black and white, and they’re just beautiful. I love seeing all kinds of photos of them, but the fact that they were taken at home by Brad himself makes them really special.
I love the photo of Angelina making a fish face, and I giggled at the slight annoyance when he caught a snapshot of her eating something, as though she was saying, “oh come ON, really?!”
My absolute favorite though is the photo of Angelina Jolie and Maddox laughing. Obviously Brad has done at least a little studying when it comes to photography because the lighting is just incredible in that shot.
I really can’t wait to get the whole magazine to see the rest of the photos!
There’s also a video clip that features the magazine spread.
(Thank you Dianne!)

Susan, Kim and Phoebe: My post is out of moderation now, and a lot of it is like your posts.
Yeah, like most things (e.g. choice of religion) this comes down to personal choices and beliefs, none of the choices being wrong – including what is age-appropriate. Some parents still ban Barbie, the even more execrable sexualized Bratz dolls, some even ban the Disney princesseses. The way I dealt with it for gifts for my cousins and nieces, and donations to a women’s shelter, was to buy the Barbies who were African American, Asian, Native American, and white ones if they had girrrl power qualities (airline captain/pilot, astronaut, doctor, WNBA player, etc.).
do you know if there is a way to find out what magazine/s in other countries (i.e. australia :)) will be printing the photos? i would like to get a copy, the preview ones are lovely.
Oddly… my favorite foto in this (excellent) group is the FISH FACE. It reveals a side of Angie I haven’t seen much of before, the silly cute side. I’ve certainly witnessed her fun loving maternal side, her graceful sexy actress side, the devoted activist side, and even the MRS. in the amazing power couple side. So I like seeing a new view. Thanks Brad and W!
uppps i forgot, i guess the fact that some people are complaining is that Maddox still is quite young. beeing a collector with a purpose is perhaps a little soon with 7. Angelina herself got her first knife with 11 or 12. but anyway, its Angelinas son and she knows the best what to do with her own kids…
the knifes aren´t sharp are they? and they´re just a collection, nothing to play if i understood it right….anyway i agree with Susan on the whole thing. i would never allow my kids to play with knifes (plastic is a whle different issue), but if Angelina does so then thats her decision. and her responsibility. i mean, do people really think that she would let her little darling harm himself or others with them? i don´t think so.
my fav pic is the one with Angie and MAdd too, i thought the same thing about the light on the pics….people who say that Brad isn´t a good artist have no idea. the pics are fabulous….
Wow, beautiful pics in W magazine. Brad has an artist in him. I like his style in photographing his family. Very natural shots. Very real. It really makes a difference when the person taking the pics is totally inspired & in love with his subjects. He lets his eyes & lenses capture the moments of the people he holds dear in his heart. The subjects themselves are in their normal ways as they are secured with the love of the photographer. Just look at their reactions. It’s priceless. I especially like to take notice of the eyes of Angie & their children. The reflection of their eyes says it all.
This W mag feature is unique in itself. It allows us to see a different kind of artistic expression. An artistry touching the core of human emotions. Love….Family bonding…Protection….Fun… These are ABSTRACT feelings but Brad successfully depicted them in a CONCRETE manner through his camera. It’s all there. They are not photoshopped or manufactured. The subjects are not conscious at all. It’s very clear there’s no effort to look beautiful when the shots were taken. The shots are definitely un-Hollywood if I must say. Thus, “regular” people like us can relate to this. It makes us take a peek of the normal life of the rich & famous, un-Hollywood style. We can say, they are “human” after all. And we appreciate & admire the JPs for that.
Now about the knife issue. Angie is a very interesting person. She collects things not just for the sake of it. She is a collector with a purpose. She learns the cultural & historical background & significance of each item she keeps. Aside from KNIVES, she has ANTIQUES and PAINTINGS too, and to those who do not know, she collects FIRST EDITION OF BOOKS that interest her. With the kind of things she collects, you could say she’s really fascinating and very artistic kind of a person. I don’t find anything wrong with Angie buying knives for her son if it becomes a hobby of his. (By the way, Angie learned fencing in her younger days, too.)Remember they travel a lot, so each country they go, it has it own kind of knife that identifies its culture. So, this is what Angie is trying to tell us- -one way to learn other culture, and not intended for killing or hurting people. I hope people will not make a big deal out of this. It is just a hobby, period.
It’s funny I have always let my son play with toy guns and swords (he likes light-sabers the best and we have massive star wars in the backyard) and this summer we started teaching him about jack-knives and how to widdle a piece of wood properly. I have friends who don’t let their kids play with toy guns or any toy weaponry, but that fact of the matter is the kids don’t even need toy guns, they all go around picking up sticks that look like guns or swords and use those. Kids will always find away around parents, I believe it is better to teach them a healthy respect for weapons and the history of them.
I love these artistic photos Brad took they are really really good and I look forward to seeing them all. He has a really good eye for design.
I want to read your response Ligaya to the knife/gun issue ;-)
Just personally, I am opposed to letting children play with plastic (or real) guns or other weapons (I have always held this opinion)…but I certainly don’t criticize other parents who do let their kids experiment with weapons…it’s a personal choice and not really welcoming of our criticisms…so, do I agree with their decision to let him have real knives (even with the blade point made as to not be dangerous)? No- but that’s just my opinion. Doesn’t make either one a bad parent and I would never criticize either one.
Oh nooooo! I want this magazine soooo badly! But I live in Germany! *cries*
wowow! Brad is a great documentary photographer. he is talented. i didnt know that. angie chose the right guy.
Very special pictures indeed. I love all of the pics, and the one with Angie’s lips looking like a fish is just so funny. I can imagine she often does that to her kids to make them laugh. My son always laughs so much when I make funny faces to tease him.
Brad is so talented and I think he has done a marvelous job in capturing those moments that are dear to his heart. This couple is really living their lives to the fullest.
UNDER MOD: my answer to critics of Angelina (not Brad) and Maddox’s knife and toy guns.
I know how you feel, Betty. But that’s our Angelina – candid, fearless, living her life without apology. (Yay!) Here’s what I’ve posted in a couple of blogs:
As much as Angelina and Brad love their kids – do you think they’d put them in harm’s way? There’s no direct correlation between movie/toy violence and real violence in real life. Japan has some of the most violent films and video games in the world, and violent crimes are almost non-existent there. There are more guns in Canada than in the U.S., but their crime statistics are nowhere as high as ours.
The gold gun around Angelina’s neck? Maddox drew it and Brad had the drawing made into a pendant. I think they’re both proud of whatever their children do as long as it isn’t destructive. I’m for gun control but not against guns per se, especially for self-defense – and especially if they’re toys and jewelry.
It’s said that child’s play is rehearsal for their roles as adults. Dolls and playing house, fighting (cowboys and Indians in my politically incorrect childhood, cops & robbers, knights, pirates, Jedi vs. Stormtroopers). To me, there’s nothing essentially different between Han Solo’s blaster and a toy gun, a lightsaber and a toy knife. Maddox’s knife is real, scaled to his size. What most media don’t report is that the KNIFE HAS BEEN DULLED, it can’t hurt anyone. Angelina is an expert of knives; she got her first knife at 11 when her mom took her to a Renaissance Faire, and she’s studied and collected them ever since. She’s passing on her knowledge to Maddox. Given how camouflaged paparazzi invaded the Jolie-Pitt home in southern France, maybe Maddox will need those skills to defend his brothers and sisters. (just kidding)
Parents in the 1970s tried changing society’s values by banning Barbies from girls, and toy guns from boys. Didn’t work – the boys would just use their hands, sticks or broom handles as substitutes for guns and swords. I’ve seen pictures of tribes in the Amazon and New Guinea, the little boys run around with miniature bows and arrows; that’s probably how the Native Americans trained their young ones to hunt, too – kind of like T-ball to Little League to the minors to the Big Show. Or rodeo performers competing when boys and girls and working up to the adult competition. Or those kids with cute miniature violins graduating to full-sized ones.
I think Angelina and Brad teaching Maddox how to handle knives responsibly and with respect, as well as teaching the value of defending others is good – maybe not for every boy and girl, but for those prepared for it.
IMO, that’s much better than the grandfather taking his 5 year old grandson hunting (I read about in Dear Margo) – how could a 5 year old know how to handle a shotgun safely?
I love this family. Truly, I agree with and echo the above comment from Christy!
Amen, Christy and everyone. I’m ecstatic with all the Jolie Pitt goodness. So many things happening everyday, can’t keep up with it all – let alone post. Thanks, Irma, for the reminder, I needed it. :-)
Back to Changeling for a second – 9 ½ minute video of NY Film Festival Q&A with Clint Eastwood (looking a bit tired I thought – that’s what festivals do to you) talking about: his switch from male protagonists to strong female ones, working with Angelina and the child actors, relationship of composing to directing and more.

Video: “Changeling” at the New York Film Festival, Monday, October 6, 2008 | 6:17 PM
“I didn’t know anything about it until I read the script,” admitted Clint Eastwood at the New York Film Festival’s press conference for “Changeling,” his highly anticipated film based on the 1920s Wineville Chicken Murders and an incident in which the police tried to convince a single mother that the boy they had brought to her was her missing son, when he was actually a runaway looking for a free trip to California. Eastwood discussed making modern day L.A. look antique and how he comes up with musical themes for his films.
I have to say…they may be beautiful. I’m just a little bit worried that there has been too many spreads this year about their family life. If they do want the paparazzi to back off, they should keep a little more private. These photos are also impinging on the kids privacy for the future. I mean…when they grow up its not going to be easy. And they may not necessarily want such public lives when they grow up. Do Brad and Angie think about that???
The Jolie-Pitts remind me that there is always this beautiful thing called family. And that by the end of the day, there’s nothing like a mother’s unconditional love. Hollywood families have always been synonym with break-ups and divorces…but I do hope and pray that the Jolie-Pitts will not end in that road cause they are so beautiful together. i can’t explain the chemistry that Brad and Angelina have with one another but there’s just something about them being together. To me, it feels so right.
Reminder on Thursday “Today Show” will air Angie’s interview by Matt Lauer. Can’t wait.
All the fans go out on October 24 for the opening of Changeling, watch & support our Angie.
God bless the Jolie-Pitt’s.
Extra showed the pictures too & they are all beautiful. God bless them.
