Sneak peek of MTV's Top Pop Group show with Mario Lopez set Thursday

Viewers can get a sneak peek of Mario Lopez’s new live music competition series MTV’s Top Pop Group during a one-hour special where Lopez will give a behind-the-scenes look at each of the nine groups that will compete in the upcoming reality show.

The one-hour special “MTV Top Pop Group: The Casting Special” will air on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

MTV Top Pop Group will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Joining Lopez in the studio will be backstage correspondent Marianela Pereyra. Celebrity judges and mentors will be announced at a later date.

Following a nationwide search in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago, MTV will welcome nine of the best undiscovered music groups to Hollywood for a chance to win $100,000 and the title of “MTV’s Top Pop Group.” Each week, a new celebrity coach will come in to mentor the groups on everything from choreography and harmony to style and stage presence.

Viewers will decide who make it to the next round each week.

Lopez, an actor, host, producer and writer as well as Dancing With the Stars runner-up, also is hosting MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Extra! Recently named him the single host of a daily nationally syndicated show. Lopez is best known for his role as “Slater” on the popular sitcom Saved by the Bell.

Pereyra has years of hosting experience ranging from her VJ days to covering the 2005 Grammy Awards for Access Hollywood.

MTV’s Top Pop Group is produced by BBC Worldwide America. The show is executive produced by Allison Wallach of BBC Worldwide America, Richard Hopkins of Fever Media, and co-executive produced by Adam Paul. Maira Suro, Lauren Dolgen and Maitee Cueva are the executives overseeing the project for MTV.
