On last night’s performance show of So You Think You Can Dance, there was a very special fourth judge on the panel. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres brought her unique humor and her love of dance to the show in addition to guest judge, choreographer Mia Michaels. At one point when Nigel was particularly critical of Evan’s facial expressions and his “naturally heavy eyelids,” Ellen told him that she disagreed with Nigel and that each person is uniquely perfect and beautiful and that Evan was perfect the way he was. She touched me with her compassion and it’s exactly what I would have expected from her. She is fantastic!

The show began with an absolutely fantastic group performance that was choreographed by SYTYCD season 2 finalist Travis Wall. It was a very impressive routine and I hope this means that we’ll see a lot more of Travis’ work on the show in the future.

For me, this performance by Melissa and Ade was the dance of the night. It was choreographed by Tyce Diorio and was about a woman with breast cancer and her dear friend. The piece was very moving and brought all the judges to tears. Nigel even had to turn his back to the camera to compose himself. I was sobing as the piece ended. Melissa & Ade were magnificent. Bravo to them and to Tyce for such a powerful dance routine!

This routine, performed by Melissa & Ade, was a lot of fun but it was clear that it wasn’t their strongest style of dance. The piece was choreographed by Tony Meredith.

This hip-hop routine, choreographed by Shane Sparks was very good. Kayla & Jason performed it wonderfully. I’m so glad that Shane is back on the show this season!!

Kayla & Jason also performed this Broadway routine that was choreographed by Tyce Diorio. They did a good job on it, but I’ve seen them both do much better.

Brandon & Jeanine were lovely in this very slow, precise waltz choreographed by Hunter Johnson. the judges were critical, but I loved it.

This pop/jazz routine choreographed by Laurie Ann Gibson and performed by Brandon & Jeanine was simply great. I think they were terrific in this routine.

This is the piece in which Nigel was critical of Evan’s expressions. I thought it was very nice. It’s a rumba performed by Evan & Janette and choreographed by Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin.

And take a look at this amazing shot of Evan and Janette dancing a jazz routine choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. Fabulous!
