Sony acquires distribution rights for Machete

90913W5_LOHAN_B-GR_07-lindsay-lohan-brSony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Lindsay Lohan’s newest movie Machete, according to Variety.

Machete is the feature-length version of the trailer by Robert Rodriguez that originally appeared in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse.

Machete will star Danny Trejo as Machete, a renegade former Mexican Federale who attempts to assassinate McLaughlin (Robert De Niro), a corrupt senator, but then gets shot himself. Although hurt, he goes on the run after Benz (Jeff Fahey), the one who double-crossed him; a “brutal rampage of revenge” ensues.

Helping Machete along the way are Padre (Cheech Marin), April (Lindsay Lohan), and Luz (Michelle Rodriguez). Lindsay’s character is described as a “socialite with a penchant for guns”. Jessica Alba co-stars as an immigration and customs enforcement agent. Rose McGowan also is on the cast.

The deal was announced Monday by Sony and Hyde Park Entertainment.

Sony worked with Rodriguez on El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, according to Variety.
