Spoiler About Tom Cruise's 'Tropic Thunder' Role

17th Annual MTV Movie Awards - Show

I was over at JustJared checking out pictures of Rihanna’s private Tropic Thunder screening and there was a little blurb abut Tom Cruise’s role in the movie. Here it is:

SPOILER ALERT!!! As reported by NYT, Tom Cruise has a rather large role in the film, “a surprise portrayal of a bald, hairy-chested, foulmouthed, dirty-dancing movie mogul.” Every other word coming out of his character’s mouth is an expletive! And as an extra treat, Tom closes out the movie with some dirty “air spanking” to hip-hop music. All in his fat suit!

This is the first I have heard of the “air spanking“. Interesting. I am trying to picture Tom Cruise in a fat suit cursing and air spanking to hip hop music. I am having a very hard time picturing it all. This definitely sounds like a role where Tom possibly had to step out of his comfort zone.

You can see Tom Cruise’s air spanking in theaters on August 15th. LOL.

“You can see Tom Cruise’s air spanking in theaters on August 15th.”
    LOL! I can’t wait!!!

  2. Anabel

Why is the media going on and on about how vulgar Tom is in this movie? To have Tom or the movie compared to Borat or Superbad – why is Tom stooping to this level? Is this all an effort to try to boost his popularity with the juvenile – Apatow movie -type crowd? It is positively boorish to see grown men burping, farting, and smoking dope and acting infantile. Then you seee the same people in the theaters guffawing and slapping their legs at the stupididty.
I know I won’t pay my good money to see him behave in such a way.

Anabel: Perhaps you should read the reviews regarding TC’s role in Tropic Thunder. From all the reviews he is hilarious in the role, expletives are used but nowhere is there gratuitous farting, burping, smoking dope or acting infantile.
Think of TC’s role in Magnolia but from a comedic angle………..His acting in TT is being compared to the greatness he showed in that role.

  4. Anon.

I have to agree, why is Cruise sinking this level of JR. High potty humor? It really seems beneath him and what he has done in the past.

  5. Lauren

Anabel, an actor is an actor. That is what they do, ACT. As in, pretend to be other people. What do you mean Tom is stooping to this level? What do you want, that he acts the same thing all the time? He has decided to stretch his acting margin and from all reviews, he seems to have excelled at this. Let the man breath for once. Stop raining on our parade.

Besides, he signed up for the role ages ago and itis a cameo. Do we have to put a negative spin on everything?

  6. Mary

He did Magnolia in the past and he was beyond brilliant in that role.

This role is comedic genius! Plain and simple………With this role TC isn’t sinking at all!

  7. Lickabee

Awww man. I’ve been looking at too much stuff in this movie. I hope it does not get spoiled for me, don’t let it happen Julie. I’m gonna watch this movie soon. I’m going with my friends to see it and its good that they don’t know as much about it as I do, because, they will be better judges about the movie, when it ends!

  8. Anabel

Actually, Magnolia wasn’t one of my favorite movies. But, I’ll watch it again sometime – from a comedic point of view . Maybe it will make me laugh instead of snort at his over-acting in that movie!
I feel he can “stretch his acting margin” without resorting to this kind of CRAP! He can do better. Katie must be so disappointed to know he has a part in a movie with such a sewer-mouth and “air spanking?!”
He’s not doing much to clear the world of this kind of lewd filth. His young impressionable fans will be imitating him. Will he set up a clinic like he did after 9/11 to clean their minds of the filth that he was personally responsible for putting there by this role? He is letting everyone down with this role.

  9. Hana

One minute “he is finished” and next he’s doing something “that is beneath him”. LOL!

  10. Anabel

I never said Tom was finished! I am looking forward to seeing him in a role that does him justice as an actor. I think he must have been feeling pretty desperate when this “opportunity” came his way. I wouldn’t call Ben Stiller his friend at all.

  11. Hana

Why wouldn’t you call Ben Stiller his friend? Do you know them personally?

TC is know for doing different project and I’m not the least bit surprise he did this movie. If the movie is not your cup of tea, then fare enough. But no one can take away the fact that he is GOOD in this movie from him or his fans no matter what anyone says. YAY! Bring on TT!!

  12. Anon.

“If the movie is not your cup of tea, then fare enough.”

Thank you for some tolerance, Hana, for those who don’t agree with you!! (And I am being sincere here.)

  13. Mary

Anabel my only suggestion is that if you are not going to see TT wait at least until you see clips of TC’s role before so harshly judging it.

The movie is a spoof on Hollywood and overflowing with comedic hits with what reviewers say is actually what goes on.

    TT is rated R.

Magnolia is a different kind of movie and I mentioed it not as a comedy comparison but because of the intensity of Cruise’s perfermance in it.
The intensity and chops he showed in that Magnolia role is present in the TT role.

  14. Hana

“Anabel my only suggestion is that if you are not going to see TT wait at least until you see clips of TC’s role before so harshly judging it.”

    AMEN!!

  15. Anabel

Mary, I will wait for you to tell about when you have seen it. I am concerned that his appearance in this film is being so heavily promoted. He has always been an ethical scientologist and his channeling of Sumner Redstone for his despicable role seems underhanded of him to me. To do this JUST for publicity and to further his own agenda is totally like he is fair-gaming Sumner Redstone. This kind of petty revenge is below the Tom Cruise I repect as an actor and human being.

  16. Mary

TC has never disrespected or said a negative word against Sumner Redstone………..The same however cannot be said of Mr. Redstone who made it a point to say be was miquoted, misunderstood in his remarks about TC.

It is assumed and reported that TC is channeling Redstone from reviews I’ve read, the character couldn’t be furher away from Redstone.

  17. Hana

Anabel, where are you getting all this agenda stuff from? This movie is made by Summer Redston’s studio (Paramount). The man know about the movie and the two of them have met up for a meeting after he did this movie.

BTW TC’s appearance is not in the promotion for this movie. Its actually supposed to be a surprise but the critics who have seen the movie are talking about it because apparently he steals the show (I guess its VERY GOOD some of them can’t help it) and we the fans know because we’re looking for any news about TC.

“By: Brad Brevet | Monday, July 28, 2008

…….I already gave Tropic Thunder the best review I have given to a comedy in a long, long time and considering I have already seen Pineapple Express I can safely tell you it is better than that film as well. The promotion for the film, however, is RIGHTLY KEEPING the best part of the film out of the promotion, and that is the presence of Tom Cruise. Cruise is the ingredient that makes this film better than the rest. His involvement is classic stuff and something you will definitely be talking about after you leave the theater….”

    Thanks to Lauren

  18. Anne

I am looking forward to this movie so much.

Anabel, I think you have several issues with this movie. I respect your sentiments, however this cameo is being hailed by everyone from fans to the hardest critic. By the way it was supposed to be a surprise.

I hope it makes it easier for you to know that Redstone was their for the screening and those around said he was laughing with them and enjoying it like every one.

I separate acting from real life so I would never mind Tom acting anything, as long as he is good in it. He could act Bush in a satire and I will enjoy it. In any case, he is not glorifying Grossman his character. The name alone is hilarious.

  19. Anabel

“BTW TC’s appearance is not in the promotion for this movie. Its actually supposed to be a surprise but the critics who have seen the movie are talking about it because apparently he steals the show”
Hana, this is EXACTLY what I mean. Why are the critics setting him up this way? The same critics who talked about his new movies being a bomb.
I think they are trying boost Ben Stiller and his movie. Never mind, that Tom comes off as a jack-ass.

  20. Hana

OMG! Anabel, have you been reading the reviews? TC does not come off as a jack-as*!

  21. tyler

There’s another recent article in which Redstone has some more interesting things to say.

  22. Anabel

The Hardy Men is the type movie that would help Tom’s career, or some romantic comedy.

What exactly is TT going to do for his career?
It’s going to prove that he can be as lewd and obscene as Borat and the other juvenile-frat house movies.
He’s a forty-five year old man now! He’s no Will Ferrell or Steve Carrell! He was an important actor before everyone turned on him for jumping on Oprah’s couch while she egged him on.
Ben Stiller is the one who will get rich off Tom making a jack-ass out of himself.

  23. Charlotte Rose

Really tyler? Can you elaborate? What did he say?

  24. Anabel

Does Sumner Redstone know Tom was imitating him?

  25. Mary

The reviewers have spoken and TC is brilliant in TT.
Also, I can’t wait to see Valkyrie.

  26. Mary

Tyler please post it……….I would love to read it as well.

  27. Anabel

I’d like to read it also, Tyler.

  28. ginger

I will be watching this because I like the cast especially Stiller,Cruise and Downey Jr. I really think Cruise portrayal gives a realistic look of how most studio heads behave. Im not talking about the comical aspect but referring to the egos and a-hole studio bosses. Only a handful bosses are pollyannas.

  29. Charlotte Rose

I saw a studio preview of Tropic Thunder last night and the critics are right. It’s absolutely hilarious. The entire film was funny, IMHO and I found Tom’s part to be really, really funny and dead on when it comes to SOME industry executive. Dirty as all get out, but really funny! LOL!

My husband and I both work in the business (although neither of us is in front of the camera) and there were a ton of inside jokes that brought the house of industry professionals down.

I’m not a big fan of Ben Stiller, but this movie is a good one. RDJ was excellent and I even liked Jack Black!

  30. PuckHappy

Did tc write his part in TT? Or is he the producer? Is UA involved in anyway? I am just curious.
Sumner Redstone says that TC would like to come back to work for him.
I guess that day that tom went to lunch with SR, they talked about how hard it is to run your own studio. tc said that it isn’t that easy.
tc must now realize that you are too tied down when you have your own studio. We will soon see what SR has for him in the near future!!!

  31. Hana

PH: you got it wrong. Its Summer Redstone who said he would like TC to come back to work for Paramount. :)

“I consider Tom Cruise a great actor and a good friend,” the Viacom chief told reporters. “And if Paramount decides – and they will make the decision – to move ahead with him, I will not object.”

“I haven’t talked with him recently,” Redstone told PEOPLE at Thursday’s Zodiac premiere in Hollywood. “But who knows, I look forward to seeing him again. He’s a great, great actor – one of the best. He was a great friend. And I look forward to being his friend again.”

  32. tyler

Hana, here’s the story, assuming it’s true:

    *************

    From contactmusic.com 22/07/2008
Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone says that if Steven Spielberg and David Geffen leave Paramount at the end of the year, as reports have indicated, Viacom will continue to own all of the DreamWorks library.

Moreover, Redstone said in a CNBC interview, “all of their work in progress belongs to us.” So that if Spielberg wants to make any of those films, he’ll have to make them for Viacom. “Spielberg will be making pictures using that product, which belongs to us, I believe for years to come,” Redstone said. “We’re all friends.”

Redstone also indicated that he’s patching things up with Tom Cruise, who he suggested may not be happy trying to fulfill multiple jobs as an actor, producer, and the head of United Artists.

Redstone booted Cruise off the Paramount lot two years ago as punishment for the actor’s controversial behavior on the Oprah Winfrey program and his advocacy of Scientology on other programs while promoting Mission Impossible III. But Redstone now says, “I still like Tom. I still think he’s a great actor. He had lunch with me. It’s clear he wants to come back.”

  33. PuckHappy

WOW! So maybe I didn’t have it wrong.
