Star Shrinking: Does Sam Ronson Have A Savior Complex?

Samantha Ronson, Lindsay LohanLindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson had a tumultuous relationship before Lindsay went to jail, but since she’s been sentenced, Sam has been spending some time visiting LiLo. In fact, just yesterday the British DJ visited Lindsay at Lynwood Correctional Facility. What could be drawing her back to Lindsay after all they’ve been through? We asked celebrity psychologist Dr. Gilda Carle to weigh in on what could be behind Sam’s moves.

“She may have a desire to save the day. She may have the desire to be a savior type of person,” said Dr. Gilda, explaining that people who like to be saviors jump in “if they feel they can do some good.”

“But once the other person regains their strength and self esteem, they’re not needed any more,” she added. Could Samantha only be interested in Lindsay if she is vulnerable?

Dr. Gilda had another suggestion: while in jail Lindsay is a captive audience for Sam, and she might be at her most attractive since she’s off drugs and stripped down. “So this might be nice for Sam to see,” she told Crushable. “But can it be maintained? The only relationships that can be maintained in a healthy way are the ones that are on an equal plane and not one person controlling the other.”

In fact, if Lindsay and Sam’s relationship is one of Sam “saving” Lindsay by controlling her actions, either subtly or not so, Lindsay is bound to grow tired of it after she gets out of jail and goes through recovery. “When you feel better about yourself, you don’t want them to be a caretaker, you want them to be on the same plane as you,” said Dr. Gilda. “They may jump in and be very, very helpful. But then you don’t want to be controlled any more. The person who is the savior, that is a controlling type of relationship because that person has the finger on the pulse of what you’re going through and you’re so vulnerable that you don’t know what is going on.”

Dr. Gilda’s guess on the possibility of Lindsay and Sam being together in the future: “Maybe for a nanosecond,” she predicted. “And then Lindsay will want to establish her own autonomy and independence and she’s not going to want to take orders.”
