Keith O’Neil of The Equinox drew up reasons why he loves Heroes. One word – SYLAR.
The way the writers and Quinto portray Sylar add to the engaging qualities of his characters for me. Instead of going the generic root for villains and making them instantly evil for the sake of being evil, they made Sylar a villain you can empathize with. You can see the buildup of him becoming evil. You watch as he transitions from the peaceful watchmaker Gabriel Gray (his real name) to the corrupt with power Sylar.
Sylar is one super-villain, no doubt. But as with most villains and killers, he has a story to tell and when told, makes us question if he truly deserves our hatred and repulsion. Sylar’s backstory – his father’s dreary clock-making business, his mom’s delusions of grandeur for her son (“You can be president if you want to, Gabriel”), and the lure of power – all ingredients to pulling out the the darkness in him. On top of that, Zachary Quinto is one hell of an actor.
Keith also commented on the disappointing season 2. “There was just too much talking in season two and not enough fight scenes. Another thing they (writers) could do is introduce one new character as opposed to the bombardment of new people in season two. Also, keep the plot simple.”
You’re right on the money, Keith. I still love Heroes in season 2 and watched it every week, but the season was anti-climatic compared to the first. There were too many independent story plots and, because of the aborted end, there wasn’t space to explore the new characters in depth. Maybe in the writer’s room, Maya and Alejandro have some cool twist in the end of their running, that would make us say “OMG! So that’s why!” but that never happened. Molly too, is one other example of an undeveloped character. Young as she is, Adair Tishler is a good actress but she wasn’t given room to shine. Same goes for the New Orleans girl (sheez, I can’t even remember her name off the top of my head.)
Hopefully Season 3:Villains will be much better, especially since Tim Kring is holed up somewhere crafting something better.
