What fan of Survivor doesn’t remember Richard Hatch, the winner of the very first season of the show? And of course, we all remember when he pulled the biggest boneheaded move in reality TV history…he evaded paying taxes on the $1 million prize and went to jail. The moral of that story is to always pay your taxes. The IRS doesn’t care what show you won.
Well, he can finally walk free again. Here’s a snippet from the official AP press release:
He’s being released Friday from the Barnstable County Jail in Bourne, southeast of Boston.
Hatch was imprisoned in 2006. He was released earlier this year to home confinement in Newport, R.I. In August, he was jailed for the remainder of his term for giving unauthorized television interviews.
He’s still not completely off the hook since he’s required to now serve three years of supervised release. I have to admit that I am totally unfamiliar with that term. Does that mean that he’s on probation? Or does it mean that he’s got to wear that ankle GPS thing? Whatever.
Hatch also has to complete a mental health program and pay all those back taxes. That’s going to be tough, since he doesn’t have a job. He claims that the judge is being especially harsh on him because he made negative comments about the situation in the press. I say, Richard needs to grow up and face the consequences of his stupid behavior.
