First, I just have to say that the location in Gabon is awe-inspiring and beautiful!
That being said, the show began with local people walking the castaways into the wilds of Gabon. They all introduced themselves to each other and Jeff Probst told them that the local customs say that the elders are the leaders so Bob & Gillian had to choose the tribes. Here’s how each tribe was chosen:
Bob –> Ace –> Sugar –> Marcus –> Charlie –> Paloma –> Kelly –> Jacque –> Corinne –> They wear the yellow buffs and are called Kota
Gillian –> Crystal –> Susie –> Matty –> Randy –> Dan –> JC –> Ken –> Michelle –> They wear the red buffs and are called Fang.
They had to race to the top of the hill to get an immunity idol for each tribe. The first person to get to the top from each tribe got immunity. At the top of the hill was also a bag of rice and other essentials that each tribe would start with. There was also an extra bag of corn & bean at the top of the hill. The first tribe to get all their members to the top got the corn & beans.
The race was tough, and the two that got immunity were Marcus for Kota, GC for Fang. The tribe that got the extra food was Kota.
Then they got the map to their camp and had to carry their things to the new camp.
When they got to their camps, they tinkered with the huts to reinforce them and started to bond as teams. Gillian had a terrific attitude and worked on improving the morale of the group. She asked them to bring elephant dung so they could use it to make fire. She said they may have things that are edible in the dung (oh, hell no!)
In the middle of the first night, they heard elephants nearby the camp. Randy hit his head and was bleeding and asked Gillian to nurse his head. It was pitch black outside so she couldn’t see it well. They called the medical team to take a look. He needed stitches on the first night! What a rotten way to start things out!
Ace led his team in a yoga session to get them ready for the challenge to come. When they all arrived to the challenge, it was a race through an obstacle course while chained together. They would retrieve puzzle pieces and the first team to solve the puzzle would have immunity for that night’s tribal council and get fire.
Kota won immunity and fire (flint). Fang now had to face the first tribal counsel of the season.
At tribal counsel, the tribe voted GC to be their leader. He shook his head and seemed unhappy with that decision. When they cast their votes, it was Michelle that was eliminated from the competition. Jeff then gave them a flint to use for fire.
GC got tired of people criticizing him and he resigned as leader. Then the Fang tribe decided to paint their faces as a sign of unity and determination to win the next challenge. Jeff told them that the winner of the challenge would get fishing equipment and the chance to send someone on the other team to Exile Island.
Kota won for a third time and got immunity & reward. They decided to send Dan to Exile Island.
At Exile Island, Dan was offered his choice between the clue to the Immunity Idol or some comfort items for his time there. Dan decided to go with the clue, not the comfort. When he got back, everyone suspected that he had the idol.
At tribal counsel, the tribe voted and Gillian was eliminated from the tribe. It’s a shame because even though she wasn’t as physically strong as the others, she had experience and a great attitude. I did like her.
