When the top golfers from around the world take on the links at Capitol Hill in the inaugural Navistar LPGA Classic, some of them might be humming “Sweet Home Alabama.”
In addition to being the host state for the event, Alabama has strong ties with new players announced for the Pro-Am and tournament field today.
On Sept. 26, one of the largest player galleries will likely be for one of Alabama¹s American Idols, Taylor Hicks. His fans, known asthe “Soul Patrol,” are encouraged to come out and show their ongoing support for Hicks. The winner of the 2006 American Idol competition is a Birmingham native and an avid golfer.
Hicks is likely to pull out both a golf club and a harmonica to entertain fans at the tournament. Tee times for Hicks, LPGA Players and other amateurs competing in the Pro-Am will be announced closer to the tournament. A Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 2001 while playing for the Auburn University golf team, Celeste Troche has been added to the Navistar LPGA Classic field as a sponsor exemption. Troche, who is a non-exempt member of the LPGA Tour, is a native of Paraguay and won the 2007
Women¹s World Cup of Golf with Julieta Granada, who also is a native of Paraguay.The Women’s World Cup of Golf was held Jan. 20-23 in Sun City, South Africa. Troche graduated from Auburn University in 2003 with a degree in International Business.
The inaugural Navistar LPGA Classic will be held Sept. 25- 30 at the Prattville location on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. With a full field of 144 players, the tournament will be held on the Senator Course at Capitol Hill.

If you’re a golf fan and a Taylor fan, this is a great way to spend the day. I went to the Senior Pro-Am in Birmingham and saw a very relaxed and loose side of Taylor. He was great with the gallery, signing autographs and joking and chatting with the crowds. And, yes, he had the biggest gallery there that day. I highly recommend it.
