The Curious Case of Benjamin Button blows the roof off DVD sales

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had an excellent run at the box office ($329,809,326 worldwide, as per here) and ended up with numerous award nominations, even winning several of the technical/artistry awards. It’s not slowing down at all now – since its release on DVD and Blu-Ray, it has topped the home sales charts.

First The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition) came in top slot for DVD sales, knocking all other contenders to the side.

On top of that, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button [Blu-ray] also topped the charts for Blu-Ray sales, bumping Twilight down to second place after a decent run in first.

I’m not surprised by this. The movie was hugely successful so it’s likely that a lot of fans who saw it in theaters wanted to own it for their collection. Meanwhile, I also know that many people skipped seeing it due to length – almost three hours is long when you add in all the trailers and whatnot – so those fans would also want to grab a copy as well so they could finally see it themselves.

Have you seen it yet? I still can’t get over how beautiful it was and how quickly the time flew by despite being a fairly action-free movie!

Fa- Actually, I always have to laugh when people talk about the box office “battle” between CCOBB and Marley and Me. I mean, the movies are in totally different genres and target different audiences.

CCOBB’s true competition at the box office was likely Tom Cruise’s film Valkeryie, and Marley and Me’s was probably Bedtime Stories (starring Adam Sandler).

Anyway, I disagree that the reason Angie and Brad haven’t been winning Oscars and other awards is because so many people h8te them. For example, I think Meryl Streep, who won the Golden Globe (or was it a SAG? I can’t remember which.) that Angie was nominated for was just as deserving of it as Angie would have been if she’d gotten it.

I DO, however, finally understand why some people feel that Angie and Brad get snubbed at the Award’s shows. When the Oscar nominees were announced, I was shocked to see that one of my favorite movies of the year, Mamma Mia!, was not nominated for any Oscars.

I felt like the movie had been snubbed, and suddenly I understand how some people feel when Angie and Brad aren’t nominated and/or don’t win.

My point is that I don’t think it’s fair to just jump to the conclusion that a movie, actor, actress, director, etc. not being nominated or winning an award is automatically because they’re being snubbed. Maybe that is the reason, but there also several other possible reasons (including that the Academy or whatever Award show we’re talking about geniunely felt that whoever won the award instead of Angie and Brad was more deserving than they were).

I loved the movie. Saw it twice and really appreciated it even more the second time, the lighting and the colors are amazing.
Only one thing I don’t get. when he leave Cate why does she not look for him, I can’t imagine having such a great love and letting it go. Anyway… Fantastic movie!

What’s up with the Angelina-kicks-him-out bit? They are both just such lovely eye candy, and the good works are sugar on top. I’m in Italy but I’d love the dvd!

You lucky, lucky Americans! Once again you´re a giant´s leap ahead of us Finnish! We have to wait for the TCCOBB DVD for months still. Even The Changeling hasn´t come out as a DVD yet. But it hopefully will in a week or so. I´m most definitely gonna buy it since it is one of the best Angie movies ever! Just like TCCOBB is absolutely one of the best movies Brad has ever made. I really loved that movie. Off the topic. Hopefully both Brad and Angie will appear together in Cannes next week. Can´t wait to see what kind of dress Angie will be wearing. Hopefully something colorful. And let´s hope that there will be new pics of the children too. Maybe they won´t take all the children with them until they stay in France for a long deserved vacation after that. Some rag wrote that they´ll be vacationing all summer in Miraval. Let´s hope that it´s true. They really deserve it. So that means that the shooting of Salt is soon over and Brad will have some time of before starting to shoot his new movie. Can´t wait to see pics of the twins. They sure are big already. God bless the JPs!

Brad Pitt Selects More Architects 4 “Make It Right”
Architects from eight firms, ranging from a young New Orleans collective to world-renowned Gehry Partners, currently are racing to finish schematic designs for Make It Right.
In mid-March the organization, founded by actor Brad Pitt to rebuild 150 houses in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina, tapped the firms to contribute additional designs to the effort. Their visions will be released June 20.
In addition to Gehry Partners, the firms include William McDonough + Partners, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, Los Angeles-based Kappe Architects/Planners, the Chilean studio Elemental, and three New Orleans firms-Bild Design, buildingstudio, and Waggoner & Ball Architects. There was no official competition; rather, the architects were selected through informal recommendations from Pitt and longtime Make It Right consultants McDonough and the Los Angeles-based firm Graft.
In 2007 Pitt commissioned 13 architects, including the local firm Billes Architects and international star Shigeru Ban, to design houses for his highly publicized Make It Right project. In its composition of local, American, and overseas firms, the latest roster of architects bears similarity to the first-round selections. “Local architects know the region, they know the climate and culture of the city, they’re a step ahead,” says Make It Right executive director Tom Darden. “It’s important to mix that experience with the innovative national and international firms that may apply new design perspective to the Lower Ninth Ward.”
Although the forthcoming schematics will abide by the same affordability and Cradle-to-Cradle sustainability criteria as Make It Right’s inaugural designs, they differ in building type. Unlike the single-family houses proposed originally, this second batch features only duplex buildings. Darden says he and Pitt have fielded repeated calls for the traditional, two-unit house from members of the Lower Ninth Ward community, and that duplexes’ ability to generate supplementary income will help residents secure affordable financing. Each should cost approximately $200,000 to erect.
Make It Right has raised funds to sponsor 91 homes; eight are finished already, and another 13 are in various stages of execution. The organization will make construction drawings for one of the new designs as soon as it is selected by a resident. Darden hopes to break ground on 10 houses every month hereafter, and to complete as many as 100 homes by the end of this year.

Hmmm… I fell for Brad in 1994 in Legends of the Fall. He was sooo beautiful & sexy, and I always said at the very least his hair should have won an Oscar! I also loved him in Meet Joe Black.
I have not seen TCCOBB yet! I would like to win the DVD. Thank you!

    Lylian,
I love reading your post. I have been a lurker at
JJ since its inception. I have seen it deteriorated. Now most of the intelligent posters are gone. I started going to Sherry’s site because she moderates it, and most of the post are not ugly and will not make you cringe.
I like reading Ligaya’s post also, and I missed her when she went sabbatical.

Why there are so many haters of Brad & Angie??? (= not win Oscars even when they deserve, tabloids fake news, break up all the time, JA forever attached, etc.)

I have a theory: as they say… follow the money!!!

2008 Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt WORLDWIDE total gross are impressive:
[Numbers only for teathers, though some movies are still making money on DVD.]

    Wanted (2008): $338,794,280
    Changeling (2008): $111,707,327
    Kung Fu Panda (2008): $633,395,021
    Total Angelina Jolie: $1,083,896,628

    Burn After Reading (2008): $154,938,891
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008): $328,890,802
    Total Brad Pitt: $483,829,693

Total Angelina Jolie + Brad Pitt: $1,567,726,321
    (Source: http://pro.imdb.com)

Even if you remove Kung Fu Panda, it is still very impressive!!!

And it is possible to realize that Angie & Brad are loved worldwide!!!
    That’s real power for me…

In addition: for who lives in the USA, JA has some relevance, but she’s not that important abroad. A proof:

Marley & Me (best JA box office in years) total gross:
Worldwide: $242,151,473 (where USA is responsible for $143,151,473, ~60%).

So, in fact, Marley & Me lost the real box office battle with Benjamin Button.

Gin – I agree! I loved the story as it is, but the love story was so beautiful that I do also wish they could have spent more time on the development of it. It was wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time.

Kim – That’s the first time I became a fan of Brad was after seeing A River Runs Through It. Loved that movie.
Sunny – Thanks for the info on the last thread about Moneyball. It would be fantastic if Brad & family spent some time here in the Bay Area.
Sherry – Thanks for the new thread. I just bought a HD TV, so I guess I need to upgrade to Blu Ray to fully appreciate a movie like TCCOBB. Cinematography was outstanding.

Will buy the blu-ray Criterion copy of CCOBB. I LOOOVE Criterion. I’m building a Criterion DVD collection.

OT: found “My Favorite Star Trek/Star Wars Movie” video via my Angelina google alert – it led me to AJ being #26 on this years Maxim 100, and I noticed the ST/SW thing. The other, I was on MTV Movies blog for SUGAR, when I noticed the SW Rains on ST’s Parade video. HAHAHAHA…

  14. By kim

Ligaya-where do you find these, they’re really good.

Can’t wait to get my copy of CCOBB, as my husband hasn’t seen it yet. I know he will enjoy it. I put it right up there with a river runs thought it. Which is the movie were I fell in love with Brad Pitt.

We have had a rental copy of CCBB for a week and have been unable to watch it yet. My granddaughters are both playing softball right now and it has been crazy. Hope to be able to watch it Monday while everyone is at school or work. Have heard so many good things about the movie, so I can’t wait. Don’t want to watch an hour at a time.

Good Morning every one here at Pittwatch, the BEST place to get honest news about our favorite couple and read POSITIVE comments as well. What can be said about CCOBB that has not been said before. It is so creative, sensitive and funny at the same time. Some movies are not overnite sensations until it sinks into our pyche and becomes immortal like Casablanca. I honestly think this will be the case with CCOBB.
Now, I would like to address mai: I have a big green statue that you can buy, cheap.

  17. By angela

i got my criterion collection copy when it came out and i have to say it’s worth the money. on the other disc, they’ve got tons of featurettes that will amaze you. on how long it took for the movie to progress and finally made it to the theatre. their aging effects (their CG people are very impressive) and making of Desplat’s music. it’s just beautiful. you guys should grab your own copy as well. :)

I love the JPs, they are extraordinary people. To believe those tabs, is an insult to my intelligence.

  19. By Ligaya

Will buy the blu-ray version of CCOBB.

OT: I’ve posted another funny Star Trek/Star Wars video on the Leonard Nimoy vs. Brad Pitt thread.

  20. By Ligaya

Saw CCOBB several times. (Those who know me from before my sabbatical know that I watch movies I like at least 2x – once taking it all in, 2nd time for the details I missed the first time; at least I did that before money got really tight.)

Had to see CCOBB many times because there was so much in it – the story, cinematography, music, of course the beauty and talent of all the actors – Brad, Cate & Taraji.

Hubby & I went to New Orleans for the New Year – too late for the premiere ;-( . Thought it’d be fun to see CCOBB in the city it was filmed.
AND we stayed at one of the locations it was filmed, the Lanaux Mansion Inn. Plus we visited the Make It Right houses – beautiful – and talked with one of the residents; and visited the playground where Maddox & Pax played.
