The Grey's Anatomy Writers Prepare for the Callie and Hahn Relationship

Sara_ramirez_01_ncThe Grey’s Anatomy writers are hard at work preparing for season five of the series and part of that preparation involves consulting with GLAAD on what they have planned for the Callie and Hahn relationship. GLAAD called in Nikki Weiss, an out producer and manager, as well as Trish Doolan, an out writer, director and actress to help answer some of the writers’ pressing questions.

Leading lesbian website, AfterEllen, sat down with both women to discuss what it was like working with the writers, the producers, and even Sara Ramirez and Brooke Smith. The interview includes a lot of really interesting information about how the writers and actresses are approaching the lesbian storyline. While there’s no direct spoilers for season five, it does look like a lot of time and energy is being devoted to getting things “right” and portraying this relationship as honestly as possible.

So for all of you Callie/Hahn fans, check out the interview. Then come back here and discuss what you think about it all. I’m personally really impressed with the Grey’s Anatomy writers and how hard they’re working to write this storyline. While it’s hard to say what the future may hold for Callie and Hahn, I’m really looking forward to seeing their relationship develop.

I cannot tell you how impressed and honored I am that everyone with GA & especially this story line are taking it so seriously. The amount of respect and attention being paid to the story line is great. I want to thank them all. As a lesbian who is a professional and does not fit society’s image of a sexy/beautiful woman it is so fantastic to see people on TV that I can identify with, and who I find very attractive.

The way that this story line was handled was extremely impressive to me. from grey’s contacting Nikki and Trish, to the actressess dedication to making this realistic, to the final production of the big kiss in the finale…it was all done beautifully. I applaud everyone involved in this story line and i throw out a BIG THANK YOU for portraying a lesbian relationship so honestly and so beautifuly on television when so few other shows are doing it.

If anyone is interested, you can help keep shows who do portray such beautiful characters and issues like this by watching season 3b of South of Nowhere on The-N next fall. Save Spashley by going online at savespashley.com.

anyways, i hope that grey’s and other shows take notice how important the callie/hahn story line is and how important it is to this community

  3. Grey’s Anatomy Scoop: Someone Might Be Pregnant in Season 5

[...] see her being the most obvious choice. And Shonda did imply that McSteamy would be involved in the Callie/Hahn relationship to some degree come next season, so a pregnancy would certainly add some drama to the [...]

as much as I love Callica, I’d hate to see them get involed in the whole “omg the gay girl’s prego” so not original, therefore it isn’t Shonda, though I have to admit that if Callie isn’t pregnant by Mc Steamy then i have no idea where the GA writers are headed, wheich makes me all the more ready for season 5! Dont let us down Shonda!

  5. normal

that is gross and not right. how did they decide on which two girls to turn into somthing gross. was it because they are normal size? Callie belongs to mcSteamy, not George and defintly not Hann. My home will not watch the show any more if you keep it that way. your writers are sick and useless.

  6. normal

Sara, how could you allow them to do this to you????????????? You were you, an individual from the skinny winy people. I was proud of you now i am so disappointed i cant seem to watch you anymore. I over looked the fact they made you change your makeup style and i know it is difficult to fit in when your bone structure is not wimpy and tiny but my GOD why? I am really disappointed in you. What does your family think? Stand up for your rights. Tell them to make it a dream and go back to be a normal woman and have fun with mcSteamy.

  7. Michelle

Normal, i liked callie with Mcsteamy too, but u do know that sara is a huge gay rights activist dont you? I dont think they forced it upon her or gave her ultimatums, in a couple interviews she implied that she was ok with it and even if,Its just acting and she’s just playing a character. I mean T.R knight(george) is gay and he has to play straight for the camera and i dnt hear him complaining. Kate walsh and sandra(christina)played a couple in a movie, brooke (erica) and sandra played a couple in a broadway play i mean its just acting its not about “fitting in” or being “normal”.

Also , She’s a spokesperson for GLAAD + she met up with members of GLAAD along with the writers and producers of the show to discuss her new role. She seems ok with it + u never know how its gonna turn out in season 5 so i dont think u should turn your back on the show just like that.

Callie + Erica/Callie+Mark it doesnt matter i just want Callie to have a happy ending this season.

yes, i did know about Sara, but that is something we in our home do not want to watch. Something like that should be left to cable. yes, i understand george is that way but that is his private life. Actually we all should be grossed out since somehow all of those individuals have slept together with an exception of 2?

Good lord Normal get a life. If you don’t wanna see the show turn off the tv. I hate to say it but being so against us, could bite you in the butt. Someday your child or a family member might come to you and tell you that they are gay. What then you turn your back on them and stop loving them? Because of something they can’t help. When I was 12 yrs old. I realized that I wasn’t like other girls that I went to school and church with. All those girls had b/f and I was more interested in the girls than I was the boys. But to make me look (normal) I dated a couple of boys. I was so miserable that I thought about killing myself several times. And night after night I spent praying for the lord to heal me and take this from me. It never happened. When I was 24 yrs old I had a bad moped wreck and it hurt me pretty bad. In the days that followed I decided that life was short and I was going to start living my life. I told my best friend that is gay, that I was also gay. I got involved with my friends niece and we was together for 2 1/2 years. In my 47 yrs I’ve been in 3 relationships. So I love the parts these 2 are playing. I can relate to the struggle that they are going to face. Look at the heart of people, see there goodness. Because who we sleep with is just a small part of who we are. I’m sorry that I was mean and hateful in the beginning of this post. But I’m going to pray that god gives you understanding of what we go through so maybe you can have more compassion for people.

You all have fun posting and talking about the show. I myself won’t be back, after what has happen to Brooke Smith. This day I’m both sad and a little pleased. Sad that people are so closed minded that they fire one of the best actors they have on grey’s. Sad that this is 2008 and people are so stupid about relationships that don’t fit into there little world, they destroy them. I know that these 2 girls where only playing a part. But the part they where playing is my life. I live in a world that as long as I don’t hold my g/f’s hand or kiss her in public. People can only guess that I’m a lesbian. I should not have to hide who I am. Today something totally great happened. A fine black man become our president, 40 years ago this so would not have happened. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I hope that it don’t take 40 years for us to have the same rights as the straight world has. When I come to this site this morning and read that Brooke Smith had been fired. It was like a kick in the teeth. I can only hope that this makes alot of the viewers reconsider watching abc and grey’s. I myself will no longer watch after thursday night. I will totally miss the girls, they could have done alot of good with there part on the show. But we will never know. And sara I hope at some point you have the guts to walk away from these people.

  12. mdb

I am with you The Dimps. After this week I will find something else to watch on Thursdays. I am very sad that what was once a great show has fallen so far. The glasses speech Erica has was one of the best pieces of writing I have seen in a long time.

This country made a major step forward in their thinking yesterday lets hope over the next few years sex, sexual orientation and sexuality can become a non-issue as well. While I am lucky to live in a fairly open-minded part of the country I know many of my fellow GLBT members are in danger every day. I hope some day that will no longer be the case.

Peace & light to all the interesting people I have read here over the past year.

That part made me cry. That was one strong speech. I hate it that she is gone. I knew she was going to get killed in a car wreck. In the preview of next week show you can see someone on the op table and Callie is crying. So she is gone:( Thank you greys thank you ABC. You all have totally pissed me off. That only way to teach them a lesson is to stop watching the show.
