Patrick Swayze, I feel in love with you in 1987.
When Baby clumsily stumbled into that nightclub and saw you dirty dancing with Penny, I wished it was me carrying those watermelons.
If you only knew how many countless hours I spent glued to the screen watching you and Baby shimmy and shake your way all over Kellerman’s resort. Or the many, many times I forced any one of my boyfriends to do “the lift” anytime we ventured into water. And girls, if you say you haven’t done that, then I’m calling you a liar.
The singing, the dancing and the romance made Dirty Dancing unforgettable but Patrick Swayze made it legendary. Johnny Castle is no virtuoso. Characters like him have existed since the beginning of time. You know him, the jaded bad boy with the devil may care attitude, who turns around and softens up, with the love of a good woman.
But those characters didn’t have Patrick Swayze behind them. Not only did he charm his way into the hearts of every young girl in Dirty Dancing, but he also broke those same hearts when he played the spirit of a murdered man in Ghost.
If Patrick Swayze knew how to do one thing, it was captivate an audience and take them for a ride right along with him. When he was dancing across that log with Baby, we shimmied right along with him. And when he teamed up with Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost, we were laughing right along with him, too.
Enjoy classic Patrick Swayze.
