Okay guys, I’m not so sure about this one. Episode 6×03 is called, “Pain Killer.” I hadn’t heard of a song called “Pain Killer” before, so I turned to my trusty Title Songs companion, YouTube, to help suss it out. I found two songs, “Painkiller,” by Judas Priest, and “Pain Killer” by Turin Brakes. Although I nearly went with the Judas Priest song, I actually think that it’s more likely that Turin Brakes actually inspired the title. However, I”ll present the evidence and let you decide.
Turin Brakes, “Pain Killer”
- It’s slower and more in line with the other song inspirations for Medium.
- Their title is “Pain Killer,” like the episode, instead of the one-word, “painkiller.”
- Turin Brakes has been featured on TV before– on season 1 of The O.C.
Summer rain, dripping down your face again
Summer rain, praying someone feels the same
Take the pain killer, cycle on your bicycle
Leave all this misery behind
Judas Priests “Painkiller”
It’s older, and more well-known. If you type “pain killer” into YouTube, it’s the first several entries that come up.
It’s featured on Rock Band 2, which I could totally picture the writers playing.
Judas Priest describes the “painkiller” as, “a metal messiah sent to the world to destroy evil and rescue mankind from destruction.” Sounds like a certain doctor with a God-complex, no?
He is the Painkiller
This is the Painkiller
Wings of steel Painkiller
Deadly wheels Painkiller
Going back over the evidence, I’m really not sure. The lyrics on this one are pretty compelling… What do you guys think?

I can’t watch the second clip, location restrictions. However, I know the first song very well, on my ipod as is Rain City from the O.C.(It’s really sad but I remember the episode and the moment where it plays. It’s quite a pivotal one in setting up the show and probably the episode that drew me in!)
As for Pain Killer, it was only a three week hit in the UK. I thought it was released more recently than 2003, ah time. http://www.chartstats.com/songinfo.php?id=30642
I saw them as a support act once many years ago, can’t remember whom exactly they supported.
I will try and listen to that other song and answer the poll tomorrow!
Wow, can’t believe you’ve never heard Judas Priest’s Painkiller before, they kinda set up a golden age in rock and heavy music… and BTW you shoul really check the wikipedia article for the song, I’m sure you’ll get a lil’ surprised as what the song really meant, I strongly recommend that. As for wich song is the title based on, I’m going with neither of them, I think is based on the fact the the doctor tought he really was killing the pain on their patients…
Oh that’s great, sorry if I get a lil’ heated but I’m heavy all over. I gotta go with Judas Priest song ’cause it deal with the fact that someone believes himself to be an actual pain killer (Rob Halford meant his depression) and he doctor on this ep was delusional thinking he was killing the pain on those (by his POW) who couldn’t survive the treatments.Greetings from MX
Hey just thought you should know, the song from the “Pain Killer” episode isn’t called “Pain Killer”. It’s called “Hey Soul Sista”. It’s by Train off of their “Save Me San Fransisco” album. I went looking for it too and that’s what I found.
I actually linked to the Wiki page in the article– it was some interesting stuff. It seems as though all of Medium’s episodes are song titles or lyrics. I’m going back and finding the inspiration for the ones this season. We’ve had “Who’s That Girl?” by Madonna, “Fever” by Peggy Lee, and “Deja Vu All Over Again” by John Fogerty so far.
This post is talking about the song that the title of the episode comes from. You are correct about the “Hey Soul Sister” song. I talk about it in this post.
