Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes attended the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday evening (May 9). Katie wore her own designs: Holmes-Yang!

Katie’s outfit was all ivory, which included a blazer, top and long skirt. It’s great to see Katie in her own designs and I am anxious to see what else she comes up with.
Tom went with the classic black suit and looks amazing. He and Katie compliment each other with the dark and light colors.
The agency that snapped this photo said that Tom and Katie were nice enough to stop and pose for pictures and sign autographs for fans. They are always so good about that.
Other celebrities and such that attended the dinner included Todd Palin, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Sting and his wife Trudie Styler. More photos of Tom and Katie below.

IMO Katie’s outfit is simple and elegant.
IMHO, that outfit is way too matronly for a 30 year old woman! The jacket is boxy and unflattering and the top looks as if it needs to be pressed. Either that or its pulling around the neckline. I don’t care for it at all. Katie has so many designers at her beck and call. Why go with this?!?! Why, Katie. WHY!?!?
Also, her makeup is too heavy and her hair is very blah. Sorry guys. Don’t mean to be critical but I’m very disappointed in this look. Start wearing Armani again Katie!!
On the other hand, Tom looks great. Men have it so easy. Stick on a suit and a tie and they’re good to go. LOL!

Matronly? Over 70? For heaven’s sake; they are at a dinner with the President! Wearing some low-cut or overly snug outfit would be like trying to outshine the bride! THey both look fabulous and are appropriatley dressed; Katie looks great and glad her hair is growing out!

Funny you should say that about Armani, Charlotte Rose, I had the same thought , most of Katies best looks were from Armani she seems to have stopped wearing his clothes for some reason. I don’t mind the rest of the outfit, the skirt and top I think are quite sweet, but that jacket ,oh that jacket ruined everything, it took away the young , and gave the outfit a very very mature look, as a matter of fact as awful as it sounds Katies outfit looks very much like the outfit my cousins mother in law wore to my cousins daughters christening ,(her granddaughter) only the shorter version of Katies outfit. It might be an elegant outfit but not for a 30 yr old, presidents dinner or not. I’ll make a bet that if she was just plain ole Katie Holmes and not Mrs Cruise, she wouldn’t
have even glanced at that outfit, she seems desperate to make herself look older.
I don’t think Katie’s outfit looks old or matronly at all, very chic and classy and appropriate for the occasion. The shape of the jacket is very 80’s which is in just now. I think she looks great! Tom always looks great though, doesn’t he? What a couple.
Oh Lord…… why is she dressing like Bea Arthur again?? The gown and jacket scream matronly. That outfit is ideal for a woman in her 60’s…infact, looks like what my cousins mom wore to a wedding when she was 58! The fact that she is at a White House dinner is not the case…..Katie has been seen wearing older woman looking outfits now at various events…..has nada to do with a White House dinner. Case in point, she wore that beaded cardi at the Star Trek premiere and that is a cardigan that a much older woman would wear. I agree with Annie that its as if she is intentionally trying to appear more mature. Why??? The woman just turned 30 and is attractive….who in Hollywood for heaven sake wishes to appear older??? I really do not get it.
oh and for those that were questioning whether or not she thought of herself as a designer…you have your answer now. back at her AMS premiere I wrote that she was designing clothing and that as a designer she should know better than to wear that black and cream lace jumpsuit to an event and some wrote on this thread that her being a designer was speculation.

I completely agree with you annie! My first thought when I saw the outfit was 1980’s Mother of the Bride! I’m not suggesting Katie should have worn something tasteless or lowcut, however plenty of the other young Hollywood types were dressed age appropriate and looked lovely. Katie just looked old and I don’t know why she made that choice. After all, she did design the outfit.
I wonder what’s up with her not wearing Armani anymore. Most of his current designs would have so appropriate for a Washington affair for a 30 year old woman!
Oh well. Opinions are like bellybuttons. We all have one! LOL!
I think she looks good, but yes I feel like her fairly new friendship with the annie hall chick( sorry her name escapes me)is reflective in this look….

Katie was one of the few women I thought was appropriately dressed for the occasion.
Understated but elegant nonetheless.
Many, many of those outfits seemed more suitable for an Oscar or Golden Globe red carpet.
In my opinion as she usually does when she steps out for an event, Katie got it right.
I’m not saying its not elegant, it is, Katie is a lovely looking young woman, tall and slim I think she’s equal to any model around, but that design is much too mature for her age. She should allow herself to be young, instead of trying to make herself appear older than her years, maybe thats the way she feels , I don’t know. The first HY design Katie wore at the premier of Tropical Thunder, was attractive and youthful and quite well recieved. To me the 80s were not a nice era for clothes, hope she doesn’t go there with them. Katie now is very very much in the public eye, she is young and attractive, and people have taken an interest in the way she dresses, so there is going to be more interest in her , because she has her own line, it has to be appealing to the eye, and her designs have to look that they are her, young and good looking. People are always going to try to bring her down, but I’m not sure if she has people around who know the game, and give her the right advice. Whether you like Victoria Beckam or not she knows what suits her and works on that, I know its early days with Katie, but I’m not sure about her. At VBs birthday, I believe Katie wore a Lanvin dress, I only saw 1 proper pic of it , but it looked nice , nice colour slits at the side….then she spoils it by wearing a cardigan. I’m not criticising Katie, I only ever say things I see with my 2 eyes , but Katie needs to work on a few things if she is going to succeed,paticularly with her own designs, or at least thats the way I see it.

This season is all about cross-mixing bold pieces with something simple or sweet – either softening a look or adding more edge to it. Like for example, for an unusual yet chic look, mix 80’s with romantic sophistication.
Thanks Mary, but those designs were young looking. I have no problem with that. I remember the 80s I wore halter necks , boob tubes and srapless dresses with huge splits, but then you have the Dynasty looks , and god forbid The Golden Girls. I seem to come across as being negative with Katie, but again let me give an example of what I mean. Take the Star Trek premiere, Katie had on the Bea Arthur top as Jenna puts it, and a dress or top that was closed up to the neck, the whole look was so oldish and severe, its just not right, but maybe if the her outfit was strapless and showed a bit of skin, it would have perhaps looked more appealing, and not so middle aged. Mary, Katie is beautiful and young , thats what her clothes should convey. I’m older than Katie, yet I wouldn’t wear a cardigan with a strapless Lanvin dress for anything, if you feel cold , wear a nice mini dress with a 3/4 sleeve or something. Honestly I hate the way I go on about Katie sometimes, but I don’t like seeing her wonderful natural attributes going to waste, on middle aged fashions.
When Katie was younger she dressed very conservatively as well…………Check out some of her pics at premieres (not photo-shoots) before she ever met Tom.

I happen to like what she wore to the dinner and I liked what she wore when she was last here in NYC.
Eyes will always be on Katie but she’s doing it her way…..Bravo to her and I for one am looking forward to what she’ll wear next. Bring it on!
Predictable is so boring.
Yes, she was on the conservative side, could be that her hair was also longer, and that added something to her. Also ,I wonder if maybe I’m a bit on the tarty side ,because I don’t understand cardigans on people(unless its winter), much prefer little jackets, and I like to show a bit of skin. I’m only 5′3, I’m ok looking, nothing spectacular, my husband likes me, but I think I have always known what suits me, I just wish I was taller. My sons godfathers girlfriend is 5′9 and she is truly spectacular, she is also a little conservative , but in a classic way as opposed to wearing older things. No matter how I ramble on about Katie, I truly believe she has it in her to outshine most of the ladies in Holly wood .
Well, its pretty clear I’m in annie and Jenna’s camp here. There’s a difference between conservative and matronly. BIG DIFFERENCE. I’m very conservative but I’m certainly not matronly and Katie and I are not far apart in age (I’m a little older). She also doesn’t need to be “predictable”. I don’t think that’s what anyone is saying here. There are so many innovative, interesting designers out there from which to choose. Holmes-Yang is just not one of them. Its also not just the matronly aspect of the dress. It was poorly fitted as well. That shouldn’t happen with one’s own design!! (or any design in Katie’s case – its certainly not a financial issue!) The jacket overwhelmed the entire thing and on Katie’s small frame (yes, she’s tall, but she’s very slim).
Anyway, gotta give Mary points. If someone doesn’t see things her way, she has the tenacity to try and make them see it her way.

I did not read Mary’s link but I read an article with the headline: Katie goes Grandma style to the White House!! The article ripped her design to shreds stating that although it was a fairly attractive design it was clearly cut for a much older woman……a mother of the bride. The article goes on to write that Demi Moore, who is years older than Katie, looked youthful and sexy. The article questions Katie’s motives for dressing elderly. The design was very pretty, but for my mom to wear, not my 30 year old cousin. CRose: I agree that there is a difference between conservative and matronly. Matronly is a boxy cardigan paired with a plaid, below knee length skirt. Conservative is a tight turtle neck paired with a wool form fitting at the knee or above skirt. Pair it with opaque tights and leather knee high boots, throw in some chunky accessories and viola…one has conservative yet sexy.

I’m going to say something dopey now, but I’m not sure whether Katie is really brave or maybe a bit silly designing her own clothes, for the whole world to see and disect, paticularly at such big events. I might be wrong , but I feel that Katie maybe doesn’t know what actually suits her , and so she goes all over the place , tries all different things, and I feel she doesn’t have an eye for detail, eg, the cut out dress she wore at the Sag awards, with no bra, what I’m trying to say is she doesn’t seem to be able to put the look totally together, and thats important I think. Then again maybe she has to fail a few times to succeed. I’d like to go back to a couple of Katies movies. the first is First Daughter, she’s wearing a Vera Wang pale pink ballgown her hair is up, she looked so classy, and sophisticated, but young, the second beautiful dress is long purple gown, again with her hair up, and she looks so amazingly stunning. Katie has a natural classy look because even though her outfit at the dinner was matronly she still carried it off. In the Gift, there is a scene , where Katie is wearing a coctail dress with shoe string sraps and her hair is shoulder length, again the look is totally stunning, all the looks in these 2 movies are so Katie, classy , elegant, beautiful, with a touch of s..y(i”l go into moderation if i write the word). o bviously they were put together by a stylist for the movies, but peoples best looks are the ones that suit them I think. The Yang half of the partnership is a stylist I believe, if that is so, then she’s not steering her in the right direction. I’ts ok to try different styles , providing they are you and, reflect your age . Anyway, like Chalotte R says….opinions and jellybeans, love it!
The top looks nice but it really flattens her out. I prefer the sleek black tops from the previous 2 posts that show off a little bit of her curves.
But Katie is always beautiful!
