The other day I mentioned that there was a possibility of Tom Cruise reprising his role as Maverick in a Top Gun sequel. Well, it appears that those rumors were false.
Access Hollywood contacted a spokesperson from Paramount (who released “Top Gun” in 1986) and they said there was “no way” Tom Cruise would be returning to the role. A rep for Tom Cruise also told them that the rumors are false.
I wonder why the spokesperson said “no way” or if they really did say that. You never know what is true these days when it comes to quotes. Well, I for one am disappointed to hear this and I hope that if they decide to do a sequel, Tom would be asked, and if he’s asked, that he says yes.
I’ll just wait and see what happens and not believe anything for now.

Well, I guess we could only hope. I just wish he had more than one movie in a year. I miss him on the big screen.
I’m so disappointed if this is true. While I am looking forward to his Hitler movie if it ever gets to the big screen, I prefer him to be a more dashing hero in a movie. He still has his Maverick-good looks. Maybe a re-make of Pride and Prejudice with him in Colin Firth’s role of Mr. Darcy? Yum.
I already knew this rumor was false before it started. Julie, I think they heard you comment that Tom should make a sequel to Top Gun, and then they decided to get web hits by passing that rumor all over the place, because it was a good one.
Thank Goodness those rumors were false! Doing Top Gun 2 would have been viewed as an act of desperation by some!
Sorry for the above! My computer was acting wonky!! LOL!!
Anyhow, Thank goodness the rumors were false!! I think many people would have viewed this as an act of desperation on Tom’s part. The insults flying on the net would have been fast and furious!
Like I said before, I think bringing Tom back as Maverick would be a great move! I don’t think it would look like an act of desperation at all.
That is true Charlotte, there was already more then a few ” Tom’s getting desperate ” responces to this rumor .
I knew this was just a rumor from the first because the Top Gun special collectors DVD bonus featurette Afterburn : Realease and Impact explaines why a sequel was not and has never been made.
One of the editors of Top Gun said he was contacted by a Paramount exec about doing a Top Gun sequel . The plan was to cut costs and avoid Navy involvement by useing the left over aerial footage from the first. This would have been a great idea except the editor knew and had to tell them that there wasn’t any useable footage left, all of it had already been used in Top Gun.
In order to make a sequel they would have to start totally from scratch again ( getting both Tom and the Navy on board, workable agreed upon script etc..) and that is too much of a headache on top of being even more costly then the first. The one million dollars they got Tom for last time seemed a fortune then but would be a MAJOR bargin now.
The story line as it was suggested, would not be believable in todays world. I think it would be too hard to have a older male instructor with a “cocky young female student pilot” and not have a sexual harassment charge.
It is a pity that people would say it is desperate over a rumour. I always wonder how people feel when they rant and rave on about a rumour which later proves to be false.
Lauren,
Many things posted on this site by Julie are rumors and you, along with everyone else, discuss them.
@Tyler,
I have no problem with rumours. Indeed rumours and part and parcel of life. My problem is people who base their views on rumours to vilify and ridicule some one. How do these people feel when such rumours turn out to be groundless? I guess nothing, since they got an opportunity to spew their hate. That is all that matters, spewing hate on someone.
Seal, (the musician) had an excellent quote about the internet and hate. I will post it when I find it. People have lost it, they will sit infront of their computers and vent their anger on strangers because no one can see their face or hold them accountable. ‘He is Tom Cruise aka ‘punch bag’. Just punch and vent your anger over the most ridiculous rumour. He thinks he has it all, lets see whether he will when his career is ruined’,
‘…….yeah yeah yeah, he ruined it himself, he needs no help’.
‘……Then why are you doing your best to bad mouth him?’
‘…….I do it for fun, I like Katie and Suri, they are fascinating, their marriage will not last….’
on and on and on it goes….
The original articles that were posted all over the net were not posted as rumor. I guess some people believed them and some didn’t. My opinion was that IF it were true and Tom did it, it would not be in his best interest. He’s a good actor and that would have been a really bad move IMHO.
Lauren, people are not necessarily “venting hate”. It’s hard to believe that anyone would “hate” a person they don’t know. Saying that is a little extreme, don’t you think? I think most are just sharing their opinion and saying what they think based on what they believe is real information. I find it very difficult to believe that there is some vast conspiracy to slander Tom or Katie (not that you said that). LOL!
tyler, I agree with your comments. This site and other sites do post rumors because at the time they don’t know the truth. It can’t be helped. Anyone who reads them or looks at, fawns over, or criticizes the paparrazi pics taken of Tom, Katie and family are participating in and contributing to the whole gossip cycle thats out there. If no one had interest, the paps and the media wouldn’t do what they do. There is no moral high ground here. If you are participating in it, you are contributing to it, whether it’s in a positive or negative way. The paparrazi and the gossip magazines don’t care as long as it sells.
Just testing because my post on another thread is not appearing.
I’ve deleted a bunch of comments. Please stay on the topic of the post.
Well, if it’s too costly to do a Top Gun 2, surely Tom could slip into a “Maverick” -type role in another movie. I don’t think he’s too old!
While I am really looking forward to the Hitler movie and The Hardy Men, I’d love to see him in more romantic roles. There are alot of BBC dramas that he could do re-makes of, and Katie could be in them, too. Besides Mr. Darcy, he would make a hunky Heathcliff. There are so many roles just begging for Tom Cruise to fill them!
