Tom, Katie and Suri Leaving their Hotel in Brazil

spl76836_006

I love this picture of Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise leaving their hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tom and Katie look happy, refreshed and make one great looking couple.

Suri is covering her ears and burying her head in her daddy’s shoulders, because I imagine everyone is yelling her name and snapping pictures like crazy.

Katie and Suri have spent the last several months in New York all bundled up to keep warm, so I bet it feels great to be soaking up the warmth in Brazil. It sure sounds nice to me! Suri gets to wear her favorite attire…dresses!

Check out some pictures of the family enjoying the beach here. More pictures below.

I saw similar pictures to these on another site but not quite as many as are here. I have to say that it bothers me a little bit to see that little girl so obviously distressed by the attention they are getting (hiding her face and covering her ears) while her father is hailing them all and smiling hugely at them. I don’t know, of course, but it SEEMS like her being upset isn’t even registering with him. I understand that being a celebrity means having to put up with the paps but that doesn’t mean you have to be so friendly to them when it is clear that your child is unhappy about it. It just bothers me to see this.

Why is she wearing high heels to the beach? Come to think of it, she wore those or similiar colored heels to the beach when they were in France two years ago. Odd choice of footwear. Perhaps she thinks with heels she will look thinner. Suri’s flip flops are adorable and you can tell she really is growing up quickly. TC is dressed sensibly and looks good. How nice to relax in the warm weather finally!

  3. Jenna

Lilliane: Perhaps TC thinks that with constant exposure to the paps Suri will eventually become desensitized to their presence. Just a theory of mine. Its a common behavioral modification technique.

I don’t think they’re oblivious to it but I do think they’re caught between a rock and a hard place. Unless they never take Suri anywhere with them and they ignore the fans who come out to see them.
Many times you hear their security ask for space or TC say he’s with his children.
In the case of the above pics, the reports say they were waving to fans who numbered in the hundreds.

  5. Lilianne

Hm…well, I am a fan and if I was out somewhere and saw a celeb with their child and saw that child in distress I would understand if that celeb didn’t wave to me or react positively to me. I would feel upset that my presence was bothering a child so much. I get it that Tom might feel that he is between a rock and a hard place with regard to protecting his child and responding to his fans. And I am not one of those people who thinks he should hide his children away and never be seen with her. But at the same time there has to be some sort of line drawn so that that little girl does not have to feel like that. Can’t they leave the hotel by a side door or something like that? There is a time and a place for fans and at a hotel on a vacation is not one of them.

  6. Mary

There’s a video of this that shows them exiting the hotel and Tom waving. You can clearly hear the screams from the crowd.

I think the paps and fans need to back off.
When they were here in NYC the attention was the same……….
Maybe for them it is a case of it is what is and they deal with it as it comes.

In the pics, Tom looks concerned that Suri is not playing, or socializing with the other kids . Too bad they can’t put her in school with other kids where she could learn to socialize. That would also teach her to get used to noise, which most kids revel in.

  8. Mary

When Katie was on Broadway and signing autographs while holding Suri, Suri seemed completely unaffected by the noise of the fans………..It depends on the situation I guess.

  9. tyler

I don’t think it’s just about paps and noise. I think it’s deeper than that. Watch as she stands idly on the beach as the other kids play. The paps at this point are out of reach on boats shooting with telephoto lenses, so they’re definitely not in her face, yet she doesn’t engage. Seems like these two parents are on their own with this since their advisors don’t believe in emotional/phsychological development. On the other hand, maybe Suri will work it all out on her own. She’s still in diapers so it looks like she’s doing it her way. The good news for her is that in a year or two, the paps will lose interest. By then, maybe Tom will have talked Katie into another one and the paps will have someone new in their sights.

  10. tyler

BTW, I’m not a phsychologist, but someone in my family is an elementary school teacher, and I hear about this stuff all the time.

  11. Karen

The pictures on the military base’s beach were all nice, and secluded, and family-oriented, until you saw a wide shot of the family completely surrounded by hundreds of onlookers and a boat filled with photographers. One can really see it from this family’s, and more specifically a toddler’s, perspective. Pretty scary stuff!

  12. Mary

None of us have any right to speak to Suri’s emotional and psychological development. To do that you’d have to meet her and interact with her.

She seems like a very happy child and very aware if what’s going in around her.

  13. Starkist

I think some of you are to hard on Tom and Katie! Tom waving to his fans isn’t what’s upsetting Suri it’s the fans yelling and taking pictures. If you want to make Suri happy ask fan millions of fans to leave the Cruise’s alone! Yeah we all know that’s not possible so now you realize it is what it is….and Tom and Katie have to live their life and not hide away from the public.

  14. tyler

Mary, I believe she is a happy girl. That wasn’t my point, but I can see how it could have been taken that way so I’d like to issue a retraction :)

  15. Barty

Katie always has 4/5inch heels on, then is taller then Tom in the first place, with the heels, he looks like a little brother standing next to her. DYI the heels do not do much for the appearance of her leggs either.!!!
    Dump the heels

  16. annie

I must admit that I also think Katie should wear lower heels, there are beautiful shoes around with a 3inch heel, those shoes she wore at the Sag awards were nice, she looks so cute in those green sandals with the yellow dress, I really like it. Katie loves her high heels but sometimes they are too high, it would be alright maybe if Tom was 6ft, ok,but since he is not I think she should adjust accordingly.

  17. Leah

I guess because you think so annie she should?? Here we go again the same people…

  18. annie

Leah, please ,ok, this is my opinion, I am in no way knocking her, I like Katie, I’ve been here for a year now, if you can go back and see what I have said, you will never find anything bad, rude, or disrespectful, but if there is something I don’t like, what do you want me to say, that its great because Katie is wearing it, I have said that I don’t like her hair short, I’ve commented on her thinness, because you can’t help but wonder why, I’m one of the few that liked a lot of what she wore in NY. Really, if there are going to be misunderstandings all the time , maybe I shouldn’t be here.

  19. Lauren

Suri has parents thank you, they love her more than you. By the way, Violet Affleck and Kingston Rossdale are still in diapers too. So are many 2 year olds.

  20. tyler

I’m surprised all these kids are still untrained. Possibly because they travel alot and don’t have the needed stability. Generally speaking, if they’re not trained by age 3, this is considered a problem that should be brought to the attention of a doctor. All the kids you mention, Lauren, are 3, or very close to it.

  21. Mary

Annie: I think it’s fantastic that Katie continues to wear high heels. Her husband is confident enough to have no problem with it and it hasn’t changed since they’ve been together.
    _______
Also Suri is in training pants. There’s an interview where TC talks about that………potty training.
    _________
Tyler: I appreciate the retraction. :)

  22. Mary

It’s possible that the transition to training pants has started with the others as well.
Once you make the transition, it is recommended that you don’t go back.

  23. tyler

Who knows Mary. Lauren says she isn’t trained, but I’ve seen pictures clearly not wearing a diaper.

  24. tyler

Oops, referring to Violet. I don’t know about the other little boy.

  25. Lilianne

I have to enter into this potty training debate. Firstly, I don’t know how it is possible to state for sure that Suri is or isn’t either fully potty trained or that they are not currently working on it. There are some pictures where it looks like she might have a pull-up on but it isn’t possible to tell for sure that it is either that or a diaper. Both look very similar and they only way to know for sure is to actually look to see. Potty training kids can be difficult to accomplish for many reasons. It is not possible or even logical to carry a potty chair every where you go so I wouldn’t blame the parents for putting pull-ups on her in case they aren’t able to get to a bathroom. Pediatricians are always changing or adapting thoughts or standards regarding all aspects of children’s development. It might have once been a cause for concern if a child wasn’t fully potty trained by age 3 but it is not one any longer. The current trend is that it is completely acceptable for a child to be untrained even up to age 3 or a little beyond. Each child is different and I certainly don’t see doctors encouraging parents to be alarmed if their child is untrained by age 3. When children remain untrained it is my opinion that it is usually because of the parents and not because the child has something wrong with them. I know a lot of parents who don’t even start toilet training until past the age of 3 mainly because they are too lazy or too busy to be bothered. Because it is a long process and requires that daily attention is paid to the process. You can’t start one day and work on it for a few hours and then stop because you are busy for the rest of the day and then take 2 days off and then start up again. This just confuses the child and makes it take that much longer to accomplish. But I see it happening a lot. All of this is just my opinion.

  26. Mary

    Very true Lillianne.

In the interview I referred to TC said you can’t have that it must happen now attitude. He said somehow that always ends up wasting more time.

  27. tyler

Lilliane, I think you said alot, without even realizing it, perhaps :)

  28. Leah

Why are we spending so much time on potty training with Suri? REally, none of our business. My daughter is Suri’s age and is still not potty trained and I work on it daily. My daughter started talking at 9months and speaks in full sentences. I don’t consider it an issue. children are so use to going in a diaper and its easy. It takes awhile to change a habit. At home my daughter doesn’t even wear a diaper. I wouldn’t even consider not putting a diaper on her when we leave the house and I’m not a celebrity or have that face pace life style. Can we get off this subject now and comment on relevant topics like how great this family looks and how much fun they seem to be having???

  29. tyler

If it’s a waste of your time, why did you bother to write about it as if you’re the ultimate authority? LOL.

  30. Julie Bonner

We should probably stop talking about the whole potty training issue. It’s obviously a touchy subject and I don’t want things to get out of hand.

I’m potty trained, in case any of you were wondering. ;-)

  31. Leah

That sounds like a great idea Anne. Please take Jenna and Tyler with you…
