According to USA Today, Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise and Suri Cruise will all be relocating together to Melbourne, Australia this summer. Katie has landed her first lead role since getting married.
Who is Katie playing in “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”? We finally know now! She will play half of a designing couple who are restoring their old New England house.
"I’m really looking forward to it," says Katie.
It sounds like a great character for Katie to play.
"It’s really her journey becoming a mother," unexpectedly, to her boyfriend’s daughter. "In the midst of that, there’s unexpected scares."
So there you have it! Katie is playing the mom, like some of you guessed. I am really looking forward to this film. Three months in Melbourne with the whole family…wow!

I’m so excited, they are going to be in my territory, or at least close.
I am not sure whether Tom will go with them but he will certainly visit. He has friends like Kerry Parker down under and said he loved Australia. Katie must be excited.
A wonderful summer in Australia – I wish it were me for I have never been. I also wish it wouldn’t take all the way to 2011 for the movie to come out. I just watched the original movie…it will be great to see the updated effects.
If I was sure there would be chance of seeing Katie or the whole Cruise family, I would take my husband and fly to Melbourne for a few days, it’s less than an hours flight, I would love to see Suri , I really would.
Lauren , if Tom doesn’t go with them, I can’t imagine he will be visiting often , because its a very long flight from LA to Melbourne.
I remember people commenting about Katie going home to LA from NY, I think it was 5 hrs or something, well now you’re looking at an 18 hour flight or close to that. I hope he goes with them, its so far away.
Annette, from next month its winter in Australia and Melbourne winter is cold and rainy, but its a nice city. 2011 seems like an eternity away, but maybe it will come out earlier, sometimes, or a lot of the time the media seems to get their facts wrong.

hey annie: i so hope you can see them!!!! I swear, I am a five hr. drive to NYC….I should have gone to see KH in person at AMS. My cousin saw her alot on the streets b/c she lives in NY. annie: find out where extras may be casting in Melbourne and if ya have the time head on over……you just may be lucky and catch a glimpse. Its funny b/c my cousin would see her around the theatre and would comment on how drained Katie always appeared and how weird it was that she would wear cold weather clothing when it was hot and hot weather clothing when it was cold out!!! I hope you can get a glimpse! I am glad that TC is going with her b/c that is a long time to be away from your spouse. Stinks though, that Katie is flying into another winter….as we here are now in Spring and she is going back to winter after such a brutal one here in NY. Woulod have been more fun if she was heading to a film in a warm weather location!!
australia is now starting the winter time. june and july will be rainy and windy. but melbourne is a great place. the people there are very lucky ..they can get a glimpse of the family..

The movie I saw, just had the couple – no child, no girlfriend – so I guess they are changing it up for the new one.
I can’t imagine Tom being able to leave his position at UA or his entire career behind for 3 months and stay in Melbourne. Perhaps he’ll alternate between LA and Australia as he did when Katie was in New York.
Apparently the film takes place in New England. I guess Melbourne in winter is a good substitute and probably a cheaper production alternative than filming in the US. That’s common in this town. Substitute a foreign location for the US to keep costs down. That’s why so many film and series are filmed in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada. Toronto is a great substitute for NY and costs are alot lower. The same is true of Australia.

Isn’t summer in Australia their colder months??? I thought it was warmer there around Christmas.
oops you already answered that one Annie!! Well we know that if they can get a coat on Suri, they probably won’t be able to get it off of her. They will have to insist on the cold weather clothing there more than in the states I would imagine. Katie as cold as she seems to stay, will hopefully not freeze there!!

And, the article said this is a leading role. Katie hasn’t had any other actual leading roles since she has been married. The other ones were supporting. And I didn’t mean that to imply anything at all. I was just stating a fact that the article pointed out too. Just fyi.

I hope this role proves a good one for Katie. Guillermo del Toro is a writer, and I love what he achieved in Pan’s Labrynth and other films. Then again, he’s not the director, so who knows how much of his style will come through. IMDB is listing Troy Nixey as the director, and he seems to be a newcomer. Nothing we can do but cross our fingers and hope it goes well!
