Trailer for Patricia Arquette's new film, A Single Woman

Patricia Arquette, along with several other actors including Martin Sheen and Grey’s Anatomy’s Chandra Wilson, narrate a new film called A Single Woman. A Single Woman follows the story of Jeanette Rankin,

“the peace activist, co-found of the ACLU and the first woman in the United States Congress. Elected from Montana before women had the right to vote.”

You can catch a snippet of Arquette’s voice in the trailer. I believe this film is adapted from a stage play, and it seems as though A Single Woman has kept many of the theatrical elements. It’s available on DVD, and you can order it from the website.

This is a really good movie. I saw a screening of it last year at a Women in Film Conference, and was lucky enough to hear several members of its creative team talk about it. It was truly a labor of love for everyone involved, as it was done on a shoestring budget with little or no studio support. It has been driven by its makers all the way, with no major financial backing. Which makes it all the more remarkable given the amount of special effects used in it, and the number of notable actors who lent their talents to it. It’s very innovative and uses some techniques I have never before seen used. Kudos to the filmmakers for making a story about this remarkable woman, who most people (inclluding me) had never even heard of before this movie was made. And to all the actors who lent their time and talent to contribute to this remarkable labor of love.
Oh, and this was based on a one-woman play, written by and starring Jeanette Rankin, who did a fantastic job.

Oh, and of particular interest to Medium and Patricia Arquette fans should be the “Pioneer of Peace” dvd, which features the full back-story that is told throughout the movie. It’s a beautiful story, told with incredible artwork and animation by Paul Mellender, music by Johnny Wilson, and narration by Patricia Arquette.
