I was just watching the TV Guide channel. (Look, Medium isn’t on. Cut me some slack!) Anyway, they’re doing a little overview of the 2007 Emmy nominations and the panel discussing them had very nice things to say about Patricia Arquette. They pointed out that she did a terrific job with the show and got a nomination when she only has half the air time of the other actresses nominated, since Medium gets these odd, short seasons.

That’s great to hear, Katelyn, especially since TV Guide is always getting down on Patricia and Medium, criticising it harshly, and her, or overlooking them entirely. I’ve been happy for the most part with the reaction to Patricia’s nomination. Some of the critics have been harsh, as expected, but that’s just sour grapes from those who have championed shows like Lost, The Wire, Dexter, and Friday Night Lights and are ticked that they didn’t get any nominations. But I’ve seen quite a few people, particularly longtime Emmy watchers who have been against her getting a nomination, change their tune since she got it. I’ve even heard some acknowledge (albeit begrudgingly) that she did deserve the nomination and probably deserves the win, and that her win two years wasn’t really as much of a fluke as people have been saying for the last two years. It’s funny, over at the Envelope, where everyone has been talking about all the other actresses who were in contention, and very few gave Patricia a serious chance at even making the top ten, much less getting a nomination, are suddenly all talking about Patricia and saying she could have a legitimate shot at winning. It’s nice to see that some people can admit that, even though they may not agree with something, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wrong.
I’m just happy to see her get a nomination she so richly deserves, and I sincerely hope she wins another Emmy. If good wishes could make it come true, then she’d already have the Emmy in her hand.
And it’s interesting that the critics at TVGuide said that Patricia only had about half as much air time as the other actresses, because when you look at them, Edie Falco had less air time and less screen time than Patricia, Mariska Hargitay was out for most of the season and really only had one episode she could submit that was worthy, and Sally Field and Minnie Driver, like Falco, are really part of ensembles, rather than true leading ladies, like Patricia and Kyra Sedgwick, who truly carry their shows on their backs. It’s true that they both have excellent supporting casts, but without these actresses, their shows would fail. In my mind, these two are the most deserving of the Emmy this year, and while I like Kyra, you KNOW who I’m rootin’ for. It’s Patricia all the way!!! I really do hope and pray that she wins it. Is it strange to want something so badly for someone you’ve never met?
I agree with Dawn.
However I must put my 2 cents in here. I have been a regular SOPRANO fan for many years, but am amazed at the 16 nominations they received this year. There season 9 shows were the worst shows they ever produced. The ending was ridiculous.
The nominations should be for this year only and I don’t believe they were. Sure they had a long run and many years they were the best but that shouldn’t influence this years awards.
Just in case you think I might be prejudice, I am 100% Italian. lol
I saw that special on the TVGuide channel and I liked what they had to say, especially Tom O’Neil, who is a moderator at the Envelope and probably knows more about the Emmys than anyone else. He pointed out that the episode that Patricia submitted was outstanding and that since the award is chosen by a jury based on submission, that Patricia could possibly win this year. I like that.
But that other chic had to bring up that Sally Field is also in the running. I think it’s gonna be a close race.
I sincerely hope Patricia wins. Medium and Patricia are viewed as a rotten apple, so to speak, a show that would never really ‘make it’. But it’s more than that, and I believe Patricia has showed them that. It is so wonderful and amazing that she finally gets the slack that she deserves for once. I couldn’t have picked a better Allison DuBois for the show, either, and the fact that Patricia gets so in to the show makes the show have that extra ‘edge’ that no other show can really produce. Medium is not in the mainstream, but it probably has the most loyal and well constructed fan-base around. Correct me if I’m wrong in anything I’ve said, seeing as I’m sadly not one of those hard core devoted fans.
I think anyone who has a question about Patricia Arquette’s ability to act should take a look at The One Behind the Wheel and then watch any other episode. She doesn’t even make the same expressions when she is being another character. She absolutely deserves an Emmy.
That brings up an interesting point, Katelyn. You all know that Patricia submitted “Be Kind, Rewind” for Emmy consideration, but once the finalists are decided, they have the option to change their submission if they want to.
I have been saying all along that Patricia should have submitted “The One Behind the Wheel”, but everyone over at the Envelope, who are all pretty smart about the Emmys and television, say that “Be Kind, Rewind” is a perfect submission and could very well win her the Emmy, especially since the final judging is decided primarily based on tapes, and the other competitors have weaker tapes than hers.
So here’s my question. Do you think she should change her submission to “The One Behind the Wheel”, or stick with “Be Kind, Rewind”?
Here’s what I think; as long as none of the other women change theirs, she should stick with the one she chose, but if any of them change, she should too. The panels would get to see a different side of her, and see what I think is her best work yet on Medium. But I’m not sure anymore, because so many people at the Envelope are beating the drum for this tape. A lot of them say she has a real shot at winning with it. So should she stick with it?
I think that people who aren’t used to Patricia Arquette being Allison DuBois won’t realize how well she is acting in “The One Behind the Wheel” because it needs to be compared to another episode to fully realize the difference. As a one tape only submission, “Be Kind, Rewind” may still be the best choice. Does anyone else want to weigh in?
I always liked Be Kind, Rewind better than One Behind the Wheel. What keeps on coming to mind is the scene in the hospital bed when she thinks her legs have been removed. That is so beautifully portrayed with all the emotion. No wonder I love this woman and the way she acts.
I really love both of those episodes, but One Behind the Wheel just stands out for me. Some of Patricia’s facial expressions in that episode were just absolutely breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time. When I think of beautiful performances, that is the first one that comes to my mind.
But I do agree with what Katelyn said, which is what a lot of people over at the Envelope said, that Be Kind, Rewind is a better showcase for a variety of emotions and she is Allison in that one, which could be confusing to anyone who isn’t familiar with the show. And that scene that Tom mentioned is one that stands out for me too, that and the “badass” scene, and those two scenes should resonate with the Emmy voters. Or at least I hope they do. I do think that she has a very strong submission, but now a lot of people are picking Sally Field to win, and that’s going to be tough, because she is an Emmy favorite. I don’t think she’s ever been beaten when she was nominated. She’s the only one who I think could really give Patricia some competition. Everyone agrees that the other ladies have much weaker submissions. But in a poll at the Envelope, Patricia is ranked fifth as far as who they think will win. That makes me mad. She just gets no respect, even after all the nominations and the Emmy that she already has.
I agree with Katelyn about the episode that shows what great range she has. It would be difficult for someone who has never watched the show before to determine her skill just based on The One Behind the Wheel – which was more of a Joecentric episode for Jake Weber. Don’t get me wrong, I think she did a phenomenol job in TOBTW, but she did so many more things in Be Kind Rewind.
It’s nice she’s getting some press for a change that is about the show. I think Be Kind Rewind is also a wonderful showcase for all of the actors in the show, too. How nice that all of these people are getting to see one of the BEST episodes of this season!
You’re right, Betty. I’m glad to see that she and the show are finally getting some much-deserved attention. And you’re right about Be Kind, Rewind. It is a much better showcase for Patricia’s range, but as far as talent, I think The One Behind the Wheel is a showcase for just how talented she really is. But as you said, for anyone who isn’t familiar with the show, it could be confusing and without seeing her as Allison, they couldn’t really appreciate just how good she really is as Sandra. It’s too bad the voters couldn’t see both of these episodes together and I’m sure there would be no doubt in their minds who would win the Emmy. But since they can only see one episode, Be Kind, Rewind is the best one.
And anyway, it’s a moot point now anyway. The ATAS changed its mind and now they can’t change their submissions so they’re stuck with their original tapes. Which could be good for Patricia since some of the other ladies had stronger tapes that they could have switched to. As it is now, many people feel that her tape is the strongest. Let’s just hope it’s strong enough to win.
Katelyn, didn’t someone mention having an Open Mic nite for the Emmys? How do you feel about that? That way we can dish about the dresses and guess the winners and see how good we are at picking them.
I think an open mic night at the Emmys is an excellent idea, no wonder Dawn gets paid the big bucks. Count me in.
Yes, we’re absolutely having an open mic night. I have refreshments picked out and everything already. Should we wear fancy clothes, too? I’ve got the nicest dress I’ve been saving for something special.
Awesome! That should be so much fun. We can pick our favorites and see how close we are to getting it right. And we can dish on the clothes they’re wearing. I’ll have to see what kind of dress I have to wear. And I’ve got to figure out what kind of refreshments to bring. I’ll let you know, but Open Mic nite sounds like a lot of fun. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for Patricia.
