i don’t think she takes herself too seriously or that she’s insisting on talking instead of joking. (why must we jump to the most negative conclusion about someone we don’t even know?)

look at the way she continuously wrings her hands together throughout the interview. watch how she very pointedly stares at letterman and generally avoids the audience’s gaze, only glancing at them quickly. that’s some serious social anxiety right there. it’s not about not wanting to interact with people or joke around, it’s about not being able to.

I would rank the interviews in the same order. I also agree with your Letterman comment. I was thinking that as well…it’s a whole different audience…and I think Ashley was aware of that. With Diane Sawyer, it was more an intimate conversation so I guess that explains why she was more comfortable during the interview. With Letterman, she had to deal with a more mature audience, those who were probably not the biggest Olsen fans. I have a feeling she wanted to prove the audience in the studio and the viewers at home that she is a confident, smart businesswoman and that she is not like every other young celebs out there. I think she wanted to be taken seriously, but came off as “cold” or “abrasive”…her nerves probably got the best of her.

Jen–totally agree. But it was better than the Oprah interview. If I were to rank them, I’d go

1) GMA
2) Letterman
3) Oprah

I wonder ig Ash was so uncomfortable here because with Letterman you need to be “on”–ready to crack jokes and be made fun of, whereas with Diane Sawyer, it’s more like chatting with a friend? Although this theory doesn’t really explain the oprah interview!

While I applaud her for having more confidence in this interview (considering her “social awkwardness”), I kinda felt her movements were forced, like her laugh and her reactions to Letterman’s jokes…they didn’t feel natural. It seemed like she was holding back a lot and because of that, she didn’t get to showcase her personality. I bet she came off as a snob to some people. It was quite different from her Good Morning America interview which I preferred over this one. She seemed more at ease, really sweet/shy and not trying to impress anyone. At the same time, I kinda feel bad because I know how hard it is to talk in front of people.

throughout the interview letterman gave her many chances to make a joke but she kept being serious and insisted at what she wanted to say. she might as well just read a speech if she doesn’t want to interact with people. maybe she takes herself too seriously or she has forgotten how to take part in a conversation…

i think they are lying about the covers… maybe it s MK s universal version of the joke she used to pull when making restaurant reservations on Ashley s name.
