Video: Chaz Bono And Jennifer Elia Have The Most Awkward Non-Proposal Ever

Last night, Chaz Bono‘s reality series Being Chaz premiered on OWN, and all we can talk about is this clip of Chaz proposing (we think) to longtime girlfriend Jennifer Elia. It turns out that he officially popped the question back in 2009, but never actually gave Jennifer a ring. That’s ostensibly what’s going on here, as they stand atop Seattle’s Space Needle… except that Chaz never actually says the words “will you marry me?”

As you can see, Chaz doesn’t even get down on one knee; he just presents the ring. Jennifer, for her part, does she seem stunned and emotional, so maybe it’s a trick of the editing that this looks awkward and anticlimactic.

…And then she says not the three words we were expecting to hear, but a different way of showing her gratitude: “Heavy shit, man.” We don’t get these two, but good for them for staying together through Chaz’s transition from female to male and his controversy while competing on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars this season.

My parents were in a similar situation; my dad tried to propose to my mom one Christmas early in their relationship, and she just thanked him for the ring and cut off any marriage discussion. But that was in the privacy of their apartment, not on top of a famous building with reality crews broadcasting the event to millions of viewers.

Poor awkward Chaz.
