Video footage of Angelina Jolie in Thailand for the UNHCR

There’s some excellent video footage of Angelina Jolie in Thailand on her UNHCR trip available now!

Shot for the UNHCR, Angelina narrates parts of it, informing us of the refugee problem in Thailand right now, including some people who have been living in refugee camps for over twenty years, unable to leave and unable to return home. In between the narration we get to see Angelina sitting with people, talking to them and getting to know their situation.

One thing that I find very telling is that Angelina always looks at the people she is speaking with – many times I have seen people looking at the translators when they don’t understand the language, but Angelina makes a connection with the refugees, talking directly to them and listening to them even when someone else is translating from one language to another.

I really enjoy having the chance to see UNHCR videos because it’s one thing to read the plight of people who are forced from their home country and see a few pictures, but it’s another to see footage and really grasp what these people are going through. Seeing their tiny shacks and how small the area is in which they must remain really drives it home somehow.

I have been loving the conversation we’ve been having in the previous post, I enjoy talking about this and hearing your opinions. Please feel free to continue to do so over there or in this new post. As much fun as it may be to talk about how much we love or hate her dress and how great Brad looks with or without his caps and mustache, I truly love to take a moment to get serious and talk about something a little bigger and more important.

thanks for the video link Sherry and Gena.
is the guy taking photo at beginning is Brad? he went with her there didn’t he? and they kinda had the same hair. haha.

anyway, i h*te the fact that she is being criticised that she is not well aware of the situation in Thailand and that she doesn’t know what she is suggesting and asking the Thai government to do. i mean, people criticize her for speaking out yet when was the last time they talked or thought about Thailand?

and i also h@te those people who thinks it’s just a PR for the Oscars. i mean, the ballot had been casted a week ago, what’s with all the h*te?

  3. angela

sorry for the double post, but yes, it is Brad who is taking the photo. he looks dorky by the way. :)
you could see him in 1:11 – 1:16.

Tamita, thanks for the info. my cable is comcast and i’ll check the listings.

it’s nice that brad supports angie on her trips!

  5. angela

Sherry, there’s a nice interview of Brad talking about fatherhood. i wanted to email it to you but i don’t know how. :)

You know before I gave up reading comments on other sites, I checked comments on a few other celebrities. I found that hate comments are like a hobby anymore, and actually I thought Brad and Angelina were better off than some others. It is sad that some people have nothing better to do than post hate mail. It says a lot more about them than about the celebrities they are writing about! Don’t read them anymore is what I say, and certainly don’t respond to them, because that just fuels their pathology. Angelina always prefaces her comments about other countries with a statement that she certainly doesn’t have the answers. What she is promoting is that other experts and organizations join forces to solve problems for unfortunate people. She does not want refugees forgotten. Anyone that criticizes her for that should be ready to present their list of involvement in charitable works.

  7. Sherry

Angela – I’ve already gotten seven emails from people telling me that it’s all a publicity stunt. Please. Even if someone doesn’t like Angelina for whatever reason, I think that people should at least realize that the UNHCR is an extremely serious and hard-working organization that has been helping refugees for years, long before Angelina joined, and I highly doubt they would have any interest in helping someone with PR.

Besides, people who want a bit of publicity do easy things in the Hollywood area – they don’t fly off to places like Thailand to spend time with refugees, they don’t head off to war-torn areas like Iraq and Darfur. People who make these accusations make me roll my eyes so hard that it hurts my eye muscles. :D

people come here just to e-mail to jab at angelina? sad

  10. isacutie

I so hope that her visit will bring the much needed attention and help that these refugees need. Sad that up to now, some people have to think that her work at UNHCR is a publicity stunt. Don’t they know that one of the reasons she is an Ambassador for them is precisely to make people aware of the plight of these refugees? As sad as it sounds, I don’t think people would pay too much attention to this if it were just your average Joe or Jane doing the work Angie is doing. Angie should be commended for using her celebrity to bring the attention to these people and issues; she doesn’t need to be criticised for it.

I knew it was just a matter of time before that kind of diatribe started.

Yet others get praised for staying on home ground to talk about hair, boyfriends & parties in a bit to promote themselves and movies.

Such is life: “no good deed goes unpunished”.

I am so sick of people putting the Jolie-Pitts down. As others have mentioned the ones who are doing all the hateful talk are the ones who have never helped anyone in their lives. Hey people the entire world is in trouble, people losing jobs, people losing their homes, we must all try really hard right now to see the good in people. I hope that Pittwatch continues to be a site where we can all offer our opionions and be respected for our differences. The Jolie-Pitts are good caring people who are teaching their children to grow up and continue to help others.

  17. Daniel Le

It melts my heart to see Angie among The refugees. Despite how beautiful and a star she is, she still manage to connect and feel for others. Sherry,I think you should you ask a donation contest, so all the Pittwatch fans can help Brangelina giving a hand to the less fortunate

  18. Nic

The woman is committed to working and helping the poor..I love this woman..she is a real classy lady and a hardworking woman!!
Who cares what people say..They are jealous..They are bitter and they are just haters.
I loved seeing Brad there with her..
No matter what she does..or how much she gets accomplished in these really poor country..She will never get the credit she really deserves..
But You know what..That still doesn’t deter Jolie from donating serious cash towards these places..or giving her time and energy!!
    Jolie Rules..
A woman that every young and old person should aspire to be more like..Imagine what an incredible world it would be!!

Comment on Ligaya’s JK Rowling Post from last thread.

I remember reading her speech to the Harvard student. People like JK Rowling and Angelina inspire the youth. They really do. The same way John F. Kennedy did when he was president. JFK started the peace corps in hope that younger people in the new generation would help out and that still holds true.

I really love his quote “Ask what not what your country can do for you but what you can do for the country.” Insert world in place in country and you have what Angelina and JK Rowling are trying to rely to the world.

  20. lili

she is really a wonderful person inside and out..she does a lot of good things to such countries..just wonderful human being..

  21. Rebecca

I wondered where they were, and I should have known she would be doing work for UNHCR. I love it that Brad is with her, taking care of his baby mama. When she was single it was one thing, but now with 6 children, I would expect that Brad would be much more worried about his love when she treks off doing her heart-work. I love to visit with people on this web-site, but I wish you would not get upset when you see the haters. Just ignore them and do not, under any circumstances, give them ANY ATTENTION. That is what they want, and I’d be willing to bet they are very young and cynical. Keep your lvoe and ignore the poison. Love you!

  22. joliepittfanatic

Awww, those kids are so cute! I know Angie and Brad will likely adopt an African girl next, but I’d love to see them eventually adopt an Asian girl as well. Asian girls, IMO, are some of the cutest kids there are!

  23. gena

I love that Brad is there with her. That is nice to see them as a team. I think this is one that thing that drew them together besides wanted a big family. The article in the Daily Telegraph is beautiful. Brad talks about his family and Angie. He prasies Angie a lot and talks about her strength. If you can find it Sherry, its a good post.
As for anything negative. It is so easy to find negative things. I focus on the positive. There is another negativism out there.

It makes you want to say Hmmmm! The lady that had the 8 babies, my co-worker said that looking at her makes her think that this lady is trying to be like Angelina Jolie. The only thing missing is Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt tells all about marriage and fatherhood
    Article from: The Daily Telegraph
    By Lisa Harvey

    February 07, 2009 12:00am

HE DOESN’T need to say it. There’s something about the way he wears that Baby Bjorn, and the matching father and son hats that gives it away.

Brad Pitt is the father of six kids – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox – and he’s as proud as punch. Forget all his career achievements, Pitt says, fatherhood is the high point of his life.

“This is what I’ve wanted for a long time,” he says.

“Being a father in a big loving family like I have is the high point of my life. It’s a very comforting feeling. There’s nothing better than being a father.

“It can be tiring sometimes, but I’m lucky that Angie is so incredibly organised and has so much energy. She’s amazing.

“The twins take a lot of her time and it’s very demanding looking after them, but she always makes sure that our other children get a lot of love and attention.”

How is life with the twins?

Pitt: It’s wonderful! It’s exhausting, also, although Angie bears the brunt of that effort. Whenever I think I’m tired, I just look at her and appreciate how much she does during the day. So I can never feel sorry for myself as much as I might like to. (Smiles)

Do you have nannies to help you? We have help when we need it and I even get to sleep once in a while. Our house is always full of activity and the kids keep us busy most of the day. But that’s part of the beauty of having a big family and enjoying that spirit.

What’s the best thing about being dad? You feel a huge amount of satisfaction in being able to teach your children and be their guides in life. It’s something I had been looking forward to for a long time and no matter how tired and stressed you might be, it’s all worth it.

How do you feel about how international your family is? I’m very proud. I’m very proud of Angie and how she has made this family work. I love that we have this kind of incredible mix of cultures and how they’re growing up together and feel part of one crazy, happy family. It’s a bit of a madhouse at times but you kind of love it.

Are you getting more sleep these days? I’ve been working on a new film in Berlin (directed by Quentin Tarantino) and so I’m enjoying my sleep time there. But you learn to get used to not sleeping a lot with six kids. But no matter how much stress you have – and there’s a lot of stress with six kids – it’s all worth it. You feel so much satisfaction in being able to teach your children about life and be their guide to the world.

Do you and Angelina ever get time for yourself? We try, but it’s hard. I try to make sure she rests in the evening so I’ll try to look after Maddox who stays up later and help out that way. As soon as the twins get a bit older, it’ll be easier.

What makes your relationship work? Angie is very open and direct and we enjoy being able to be free with our thoughts and feelings with each other. We enjoy having that rapport and way of living. I also admire her so much for her ability to take everything in stride and be so organised and coolly efficient. I get much more stressed but Angie can handle anything. So I try to learn from her example.

When you look at your big family, what kind of emotions run through you? It’s hard to describe. It’s just a very rich, warm feeling. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love them. It’s the best thing you can ever feel.

Does your home in southern France give privacy? It helps some. It’s a very laid-back area for the most part and being close to the sea and a lot of small villages makes it a really special place to raise your children. I like to take Maddox on walks because he has a lot of energy and he loves to explore.

Do the local villagers respect your privacy? They’re very respectful. We try not to stay in any one place for a long time to avoid attracting attention, but the people in the villages are incredibly polite and friendly. But we can walk around and no one will stop us for autographs or follow us. They treat us very well.

You also have a home in New Orleans where your Make It Right project rebuilding Katrina’s devastated housing has proven to be a success. Can you get around easily there? Yes. That’s another reason Angie and I love New Orleans. The people are incredibly supportive and we can walk the streets very freely, something we can’t do in LA or New York. The people in New Orleans have made us feel very welcome and that’s another reason I feel very good about the homes we’ve been able to build here and the goal of creating a better life for people.

Does having so many children ever make you long for when you could hang out, enjoy your freedom? No, no. I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything. I’ve gained so much and grown so much thanks to my family. This is a great new chapter in my life. I had my wild days and it was fun, but you know deep down that you want something more out of life at some point. The desire to settle down and lay down roots has always been a part of my way of thinking.

In Benjamin Button we see how birth and death can change a character. How have those events changed you? Babies, I like babies, I have a few of them. Let me say, in the film it speaks for the responsibility of bringing somebody into the world. As a parent your job is to show them around and prepare them for going out on their own and it’s a really high honour and they drive you crazy.

Has parenthood made it easier to shed a tear? I don’t cry. I am as hard as nails. (Laughs) I am sure parenthood has had a profound effect. I don’t think I would have been ready for this film without being a father. It changes everything, it puts a great value on life time and how I spend my time and what I do with that time. So all those things become massive and I say, yes, I am pretty hard, I am hard.

Your family has seen what you will look like when you’re an old man. What was their reaction? Oddly enough I looked somewhere like my grandfather. When I was in full make-up the kids came to set and I tried to prepare them for the moment. Mummy tried to explain to them this is daddy. They got to the set, it didn’t phase them, they didn’t comment, so that was somehow nutty.

What was it about the story that meant the most to you or made it so compelling to you? Just the beauty and sensibility of it. There are philosophical elements, it’s the kind of film that makes you think more about your life and what’s important to you. When you think about this man’s journey, and it’s an incredible journey, you start thinking about how precious life is and what you want to do with your time on earth. That’s what struck me. It makes you doubly aware of the kind of life you are leading and the decisions you make.

How afraid are you of getting older and dying? I’m more afraid of how I go. In itself it doesn’t necessarily .. well, I’m interested in that as well, but fire doesn’t appeal to me, tight spaces don’t appeal to me. A shark could be interesting!

I want to send a donation to UHNCR. I admire what they do. The lady with Angie, I wonder how she got involved. I admire these dedicated people. They do not get rich in their job but work hard.

  26. gena

Made my donation to UNHCR. Set up an automatic monthly donation. I also donate to Feed the Children, the Abandon Babies Orphanage in Africa and the Food bank here in Corpus Christi. Also donated to Make It Right when it was started by Brad.

I feel that the Lord has blest me and it is the least I can do. Angie and Brad have both motivated me to help out. They may not solve the problem but they do motivate others.
As for Oscar I am happy they were nominated.

  27. susan

i guess brad and angie went to thailand as it is so close to japan and are they are both intelligent enough to combine work commitments with humanitarian efforts and am sure they both do it from the goodness of their hearts and a real gueniune concern for the inequality in the world and both donate their time money and intellence to helping others they go to places to bring awareness learn and u bet the plight of the people to washington and the the relevant countries around the world… sharing is caring and they are both wonderful people well rounded… bless them and their family…

  28. Fan from Vietnam

gena, it is great that you are making those donations. Many of us are inspired one way or another by Angie and Brad’ good work.

I love seeing the video. I fully support what Angie has been trying to do, bringing attention to those refugees who might have been forgotten. Angie said in the video “these people have been living in these camps for 20 years, and they may continue to live here for another 20 years…”. It is so sad to see those people who live only a couple of hours flight from our country are living their lives like that for decades, generation after generation.

angela, your first post on this thread is exactly what I wanted to say. Very well said, thanks!

  29. Fan from Vietnam

oh, gena. Thanks also for the link to the interview with Brad. It’s an excellent one!

  30. therealbetty

Thanks, Sherry. I agree with you and isacutie.
The Jolie-Pitts are promoting awareness, not publicity stunt. I left Vietnam in 1975 and lived as a refugee. You are literally at the mercy of strangers. Refugees are not asking for hand-outs. They were forced from their homes and have nowhere to go. What many continue to suffer, if they survive, is posttraumatic stress beyond words.
I applaud Angie and Brad for bringing the plight of refugees to light. If this is for their own publicity, they could have just announced a donation to so and so and stayed home in their warm, comfortable French chateau.
The same people who criticize them are the ones who live in a bubble world.

  31. Kati

Thanks for the video, Sherry! It was really great to see that Brad accompanied his woman on this trip. In that way he shows that he respects her work with the refugees a lot. And sure wants to educate himself on the plight of these people. This video also shows that Angie´s work as a goodwill ambassador isn´t a publicity stunt. She is serious with her work. Although it has taken a back seat now that she has a family it doesn´t mean that she´s finished her work with UNHCR. She´s well aware of the situation in Thailand, Iraq and all those other places in the world where there are refugees. She sure feels lucky that their children have everything they could ever want but there are a lot of children – like these Thai children in this video – who don´t have the luxuries her and Brad´s children have. This video also proves that the whole JP family was in Thailand. At the moment they sure are in London for the BAFTAs tomorrorw (Feb 8). God bless he JPs always!

Twenty years! I just can’t get that out of my mind. That is childhood to young adulthood for many of them I am sure. And they can’t leave? It is horrendous and I’m proud of Angie for bringing it to our attention. She isn’t fussy about getting right down in the dirt with these refugees and you’re right, she looks them right in the eyes.

  35. Lynne

    Just made my donation!

Just like Brad & Angie, I made my small contributions thru salary deductions every 2 weeks, I donated money to Doctors Without Borders, & Catholic Charity. In my small way, I tried to help others. I tried to be the best role model for my children & to others. God bless them always.

Fearne Cotton: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are non-human
TV host is in awe of Hollywood couple

    Saturday, 7 February 2009

Fearne Cotton admits she became star-struck when she met Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt last month.

The TV presenter bumped into the couple at the Golden Globe Awards (2009)and was bowled over by their natural beauty.

‘They are like these totally non-human, shiny, beautiful creatures,’ Fearne tells the Daily Mirror.

‘Brad is beyond gorgeous while Angelina is simply a perfect specimen with bright white teeth and eyes and perfectly shiny hair. She’s just not human!’

nic, don’t worry. I doubt you actually said anything offensive. I’ll attempt to explain the moderation process (since I’m sure Sherry gets very tired of it!). Basically, WordPress, which is the blog site/network that Sherry uses to host this site, uses an automated moderation system.

If that system picks up certain words, it holds that comment in moderation. Sherry then has to manually go and sort through all of those comments, and either delete them or push them through depending on whether or not they’re approprite. She tries to get comments out of moderation as quickly as possible, but sometimes it takes awhile because she’s busy with other things.

It can certainly be very annoying to us, but if Sherry DIDN’T moderate her comments, she’d end up with a bunch of spam posts (she has said this herself before), plus a bunch of vicious posts from Angie and Brad h8ters.

Anyway, I assure you, virtually everyone here ends up in moderation at some point. Ligaya used to be our resident moderation queen, with, at one point, almost all of her posts getting moderated.

Now she doesn’t post here that much (due to personal issues, NOT the fact that her comments often get moderated!), and I’m starting to become the moderation queen! Usually, when I make multiple comments per day, at least one ends up in moderation!

Gena, thanks for sharing that article! However, I had to chuckle at the headline: “Brad Pitt tells all about marriage and family”. The Daily Telegraph must have missed the memo that Brad and Angie aren’t married!

Or maybe the media just doesn’t know quite how to refer to their relationship (calling them boyfriend and girlfriend doesn’t sound right, especially when they’ve had three kids together and adopted two, and saying “partners” also doesn’t seem to fit a relationship as deep and strong as theirs).

However, I have to give them HUGE kudos for simply saying that Brad is the father of six children, without pointing out that three are adopted. Way to go, Daily Telegraph!
